Sharon Lee is the Executive Director of the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI), a non-profit organization based in Seattle. She oversees a staff of 120 engaged in low-income housing development, management, advocacy and supportive services. LIHI staff has developed over 3,800 units of rental and homeownership housing in Washington State. LIHI owns 1,800 units serving individuals, families, seniors, homeless people and those with special needs. LIHI is a leader in developing green affordable housing. Lee is Executive Editor of the statewide Housing Washington newsletter and is an advocate on issues of housing justice, housing preservation and ending homelessness. She holds a Master of Architecture and a Master of City Planning from M.I.T. and a B.A. with honors from the University of Pennsylvania. Aqeela Sherrills has traveled the world brokering peace, but he is best known for creating the 1992 peace agreement between longtime Los Angeles gang rivals, the Bloods and the Crips. Sherrills’s inspiration came from the loss of 13 friends to gang violence. This encouraged him to lay the groundwork for peace in his neighborhood in Los Angeles. Within 10 years he had worked on the Amer-I-Can Project with former football legend Jim Brown, and established the former Community Self Determination Institute (CSDI), an agency dedicated to the transformation of his community. Between 1999 and 2006, CSDI managed over $3 million in contracts with the city and county of Los Angeles and the state of California. Sherrills’s current focus is on what he terms the ‘Reverence Movement,’ a peace process that allows people to see sacredness in one another. His work has been featured in articles appearing in Utne, LA Weekly, Los Angeles City Beat, The Urbanite, The Source and Mother Jones. In 2004, he was awarded the Activist Award of Achievement by the Gleitsman Foundation and the Norman Felton & Denise Aubuchon Humanitarian Award by Death Penalty Focus.

Simani, a 16yearold junior at Lakeside School in Seattle, is a spoken word artist and writer. She has been attending Power of Hope summer camps and Hip Hop Hope camps for three years. She often participates in local community service events and is going to Senegal in July to do service work through the Global Service Learning Program at Lakeside School.
In 2007, Simani was part of the Youth Speaks Seattle SLAM poetry team. In 2003, she won an international poetry contest called River of Words through which she had two of her poems published. Simani is passionate about social justice work and is particularly interested in promoting educational equality and intercultural awareness. Some of her goals include building connections and understanding between communities by facilitating intergenerational and intercultural dialogue. Simply Wood Rings is an Eco-conscious company that makes wooden engagement, wedding, anniversary, and commitment rings. Our design aesthetic is simple. As the wood offers so much beauty on its own, there is little need for embellishment. We use salvaged materials, giving the wood a chance at a new, noble life as a representation of love. We also invite customers to send us materials that have meaning to them: wood from a tree in their hometown, or a tree where the couple had their first kiss, even sand from the beach of the proposal. In 2006 Dr. Avé redirected her expertise from clinical practice to health education serving as CEO and consultant of New Life Health Specialists, PLC offering strategic planning, integrative health care curriculum, and instructional design. She delivers health, wellness, and leadership seminars in addition to lending her voice as a media spokeswoman and medical voiceover talent. Dr. Avé serves on committees in areas of health care disparities, diversity, multicultural health, youth and families, urban education, minority and underserved populations, and prevention. In 2003 she was a founding curriculum contributor for the American Heart Association Cultural Health Initiatives Committee’s Barbershop Program for high blood pressure early detection in the African American community and in 2009 became a member of the board of Urban Gateways in Chicago, Illinois. Due to her work as an adjunct professor teaching Culture and Health in both the Nursing and Science departments of Arizona State University and the Maricopa Community Colleges School District, she was awarded the title of “Medicine Woman” by the Gila River Reservation where she continues work to decrease rates of diabetes and obesity among native populations.
She has served as advisor and lecturer to institutions as far as Greece and China regarding merging Eastern and Western medicine and incorporating integrative medicine into didactic and clinical curricula. Dr. Avé was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her exposure to the Henry Buhl, Jr. Planetarium and Observatory and Carnegie Science Center as a child peaked her interest in science, which led to earning a B.S. in Biology with minors in chemistry and mathematics in 1994 and later becoming a doctor of naturopathic medicine in 2003 from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine.
Hayden Sims is the Founder of BoobyLove, a non-profit community breast milk exchange located in the SF Bay Area. Hayden also Co-founded Mothership HackerMoms, the first women’s hacker space dedicated to giving mothers the time and space to explore DIY craft and design, hacker/ maker culture, and all manner of creative expression. She has a talent for teaching people how to cut through all the noise and just do the things that matter.
As a mother/hacker/ entrepreneur, Hayden believes the world needs more people ardently pursuing their passions and credits the success of her ventures to the fact that she understands the pressures and demands parents face. She often says, “I’m not trying to be the perfect mother, I’m trying to be the best mom for MY son.”

Diljeet K. Singh, MD, DrPH is a Gynecologic Oncologist at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, and holds an academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She is the Co-Director of the Northwestern Ovarian Cancer Early Detection and Prevention Program and in 2009 was named Director of Government and International Relations for the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.
She began her medical career as a student at
Dr. Singh’s research interests are focused on the costs and quality of prevention and treatment of gynecologic malignancies. Her research evaluates the costs of both high technology and low technology approaches to the prevention of cervical cancer in developing and developed countries. Her work addresses the need to tailor technology and screening techniques to specific settings and populations. She continues to present nationally and internationally on HPV related disease and cervical cancer prevention.
Kait loves to facilitate the relationships between people and the plants growing around them. She consults, designs and builds gardens using edible, medicinal, natives, and only the loveliest plants. Her favorite work is in empowering others to provide healing for themselves, through personal mentorship and workshops in harvesting, processing and crafting with the plants, to create homegrown, hand-made foods and medicines.

Janna was a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer teacher in Dominica, West Indies from 1985 to 1987. He also serves as Steering Committee Chairman of the Sustainable Energy Coalition, composed of the 20+ national energy efficiency and renewable energy industry organization, advocacy groups, think tanks, and environmental groups.
Sklar has coauthored two books, “The Forbidden Fuel: A History of Power Alcohol, published in1985 which is updated and was updated and re-released in 2010 by University of Nebraska Press, and a “Consumer Guide to Solar Energy” first published in 1998 and is in its third publishing. Sklar is an Adjunct Professor at the George Washington University teaching a unique multidisciplinary sustainable energy course. On November 4, 2010 Secretary Locke approved Sklar's appointment to the Department of Commerce Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee (RE&EEAC).
