Green Festival Speakers
Fifteen-year-old Zola Berger-Schmitz first became a youth activist at the age of 13 when she began fighting for the adoption of Marine Protected Areas along the California coast. After speaking at hearings across California, making a short film, and collecting over a thousand signatures on several petitions, she received a lifetime achievement award from Heal the Bay. Zola then proceeded to found a Green Team at her school and became involved in the Los Angeles County plastic bag ban activism. For her work in her school and community, she was awarded a 2012 International Eco-Hero Award by Action for Nature. Recently, Zola spoke in front of the Los Angeles City Council at a public hearing and submited a petition urging the banning of single-use plastic bags in Los Angeles City.
