2008 Family Farmed Expo: November 21-23 -- Nov 18, 2008

This year Chicago’s Family Farmed Expo will take place on the weekend before Thanksgiving. Goodness Greeness is a proud sponsor of the Expo—bringing together regional farmers, purveyors of responsibly produced foods and artisan goods for three days at the historic Chicago Cultural Center. Friday’s events emphasize business-to-business connections, with panel discussions and seminars for farmers and retailers. Saturday and Sunday’s events are more family focused, with a kids corner and a large indoor farmers’ market—a great opportunity for Chicagoans to secure provisions for their Thanksgiving tables or purchase holiday gifts while supporting local and family-run businesses!

Goodness Greeness’s own Bob Scaman will be helping to kick off the Expo on Friday as a speaker at the opening symposium, and will moderate a panel discussion that afternoon aimed at helping local producers to learn more about successful retail marketing. Come visit our booth in the 2nd floor rotunda!

September is National Food Desert Awareness Month -- Sep 3, 2008

Rodney Scaman speaking at the Food Desert Awareness Month rallyRodney Scaman of Goodness Greeness spoke to the press on Sunday at a South Side rally marking the beginning of National Food Desert Awareness Month. A Food Desert is a neighborhood with no or distant grocery stores, but often plenty of fast food restaurants and liquor stores. Residents of Food Deserts suffer disproportionately from diet-related illnesses including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The rally, in the Food Desert neighborhood of Roseland, was hosted by the National Center for Public Research (NCPR), an association of health-focused African-American churches called Nehemiah Restoration Coalition, the Healthcare Consortium of Illinois and Goodness Greeness. Goodness Greeness distributed more than a thousand organic “Pink Pearl” apples at the event—demonstrating the demand for quality produce in every neighborhood. According to Mari Gallagher, NCPR President, "Goodness Greeness has shown both compassion and good market instincts when it comes to the food desert. They know that people everywhere want to buy fresh and healthy foods that will help them live longer, happier, and healthier lives."
Learn more about Food Deserts by visiting www.marigallagher.com/projects while the new website www.NCforPR.org is under construction. Retailers interested in being part of the solution for Chicago’s half a million Food Desert residents should contact us for information about the upcoming 2008 Chicago Grocer Expo co-convened by NCPR and the city of Chicago.

Goodness Greeness at the All Things Organic Show -- May 2, 2008

Scaman brothers greet visitors to Chicago's ATO showThe All Things Organic Trade Show & Conference in Chicago showcases how the organic industry is growing and flourishing. Hundreds of exhibitors converge on Chicago every year to display their certified organic products and ingredients and to meet with organic industry leaders. Usually Goodness Greeness rolls out a produce cart for events like this, to show off our fine organic fruits and vegetables. This year, we did things a little differently. Realizing that most attendees know what organic fruits and vegetables look like, Rick Scaman decided to arrange our disply like a living room. Being set up with a couch and comfy chairs made it that much easier for friends in the organic industry to get off their feet and chat with the Scaman brothers. It was a great opportunity to catch up and to make new connections. We were happy to welcome out-of-towners; and anyone who really wanted to see the produce was invited to visit our warehouse. Goodness Greeness also hosted the ATO’s sold-out Organic Store Tour. The tour-goers stopped at Hyde Park Produce and the Bleeding Heart Bakery before visiting our warehouse to eat lunch prepared by the Bleeding Heart Bakery, hear presentations by Driscoll’s and Go Organic! for Earth Day, and of course to stroll through our coolers.
