FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

GREEN FESTIVAL RETURNS TO CHICAGO
World’s Largest Sustainable Living Event Greens the Great Lakes Region
-- May 17 and 18, 2008 --

Chicago, IL (May 2008) - Green Festival, the nation’s largest green living event, will make its second trip to America’s heartland when it visits Chicago May 17 and 18, at the city’s historic Navy Pier.

A joint project of Global Exchange and Co-op America, two leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to environmental and social justice for more than twenty-five years, Green Festival is a forum to explore and build sustainable solutions for our communities and the environment.  With an expected attendance of more than 30,000, Chicago’s second Green Festival will host 150 visionary speakers, 350 local and national green businesses, and dozens of community and non-profit groups.  The Chicago Host Committee of 50 community leaders, including Naomi Davis, Founder of Blacks in Green and recipient of a Chicago Magazine Green Award, Peter Nicholson, Director of the Foresight Design Initiative, and Reverend Clare Butterfield, Executive Director of Faith in Place, helped design the event with local focus.

For two days, Green Festival attendees will explore the latest in clean technology, green building, socially responsible investing, eco-fashion, renewable energy, green careers and green collar jobs, natural foods, groundbreaking films, eco-tourism and more.  The wide selection of workshops, speakers and panelists will cover topics both local and international in scope, ranging from “How to Green Your Restaurant Experience” and “Eco-Home Remodeling on a Budget,” to “Building the Green Economy” and “Green Parenting: Raising Children Without Trashing the Planet.”

Mayor Richard M. Daley, who has earned a national reputation for his groundbreaking, community-based programs to address such challenges as education and neighborhood development, will welcome attendees on Saturday morning and provide remarks on the city’s environmental successes, innovations and challenges ahead. Chicago residents will learn more about their city’s environmental initiatives and resources at the City of Chicago Green Pavilion where experts will provide tips for successful urban green living and demonstrate that protecting the environment and saving money go hand-in-hand.

“With over 30,000 attendees, Green Festival’s first visit to Chicago in 2007 revealed an astounding wellspring of energy and community” says Global Exchange’s Co-Founder Kevin Danaher.  “We anticipate even greater attendance this year as Chicago residents return with friends, family and business colleagues to recharge their batteries and reignite their commitment to sustainability.”

Since the first event in 2002, Green Festival has remained a model of environmental and social leadership, consistently providing authentic information for consumers on every aspect of green living.  A stringent screening process ensures all exhibitors and sponsors meet the best practices and highest standards for environmental integrity and social responsibility.  While many events and tradeshows are notoriously wasteful, Green Festival demonstrates an unmatched commitment to reducing environmental impact by walking its green talk and reusing, recycling or composting 95 percent or more of show waste.  To further reduce the footprint of the event and its attendees, those who arrive by bicycle are offered reduced admission along with valet parking.   Green Festival also provides carbon offsets for the entire event and its participating staff and organizers.

Now in its seventh year, Green Festival’s circuit includes San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, DC and Seattle and saw over 100,000 guests in combined attendance in 2007. The next festivals will take place in Washington, DC on November 8 and 9 and in San Francisco November 14-16, 2008.

Seattle’s First Green Festival Draws Over 30,000 Attendees Event Showcases All Facets of Local Initiatives; Sets Precedent for Greening of Events Industry

Seattle, WA (April 24, 2008) – Green Festival, a joint project of Global Exchange and Co-op America, celebrated sustainability at its first Seattle event with an attendance over 30,000.  Now in its seventh year and in four cities nationwide, the world’s largest and most authentic green living show held its Pacific Northwest debut on April 12th – 13th at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center.

The event played host to over 150 visionary speakers, 300 local and national green businesses, and dozens of community and non-profit groups.  The Seattle Host Committee of nearly 200 community leaders helped design the event for local focus.

The weekend began with an official welcome of traditional song and dance from local First Nations groups and with opening remarks from Seattle’s Mayor Gregory J. Nickels and King County Council Chair Julia Patterson.

For two days, Green Festival attendees explored the latest in clean technology, green building, socially responsible investing, eco-fashion, renewable energy, green careers and green collar jobs, natural foods, groundbreaking films, eco-tourism, green building, and more.  The wide selection of workshops, speakers and panelists covered topics ranging from “Green Home Remodeling 101” and the “DIY Energy Audit,” to “Building the Green Economy” and “Grassroots Solutions to Climate Change.”

“In the biodiversity of strategies it takes to create a movement and solve social and environmental problems, many kinds of activities, action networks and gathering places are required,” says Alisa Gravitz, Co-op America Executive Director. “Some need to get people excited and motivated to take new steps, others need to encourage people to be reflective and bring forth the wisdom that they already have. We need all components to accelerate the movement, and that is the purpose Green Festival aims to serve.”

Seattle residents engaged with city’s and county’s environmental representatives at City of Seattle and King County interactive education pavilions where experts provided tips and demonstrations on all aspects of urban green living – from local transportation and volunteering, to greening your garden and exploring local foods.

“There are a million beautiful ways that people are working together to improve the health and ecosystems of our region, to strengthen communities and build an enduring infrastructure,” says Green Festival Seattle regional director Jenny Heins. “Green Festival was the perfect place to bring them together for a weekend of joy and celebration and to congratulate and support one another.”

While the event and tradeshow industries are notoriously wasteful, utilizing excessive energy, dumping tons of waste into landfills, and “leaving crater-sized environmental footprints,”* Green Festival is an exemplary model of environmental responsibility. In each locale, Green Festival demonstrates its commitment to walking its green talk, and the first Seattle Green Festival was no exception.  Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and meticulous sorting procedures to reuse, recycle and compost, 97% of all show waste was recovered, translating into only 3% of waste going into landfills.  Many festival goers also pedaled their way to a reduced carbon footprint; arriving by bicycle meant reduced admission costs and free “valet parking.”

Efforts taken to reduce the event’s environmental impact include:
  • Dozens of “resource recovery stations” were placed throughout the space to encourage proper sorting of waste into recycling, composting and landfill categories.
  • 400 “Green team” volunteers were on hand to help attendees choose the appropriate waste receptacle.
  • Event organizers worked directly with exhibitors to identify opportunities for material re-use, recycled and energy efficient fixtures, carbon emissions neutralizing and overall conversion to eco-friendly practices.
  • Plates and utensils used in the food pavilion were compostable.
  • Rather then selling expensive and wasteful bottled water, water stations allowed people to fill up their reusable water bottles for free.

Now in its seventh year, Green Festival’s circuit includes San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, DC and saw combined attendance of over 100,000 in 2007. The next festival will take place in Chicago in May 17-18, 2008 with Washington, DC and San Francisco to follow in November 2008.

Seattle Green Festival Highlights Included:

  • Nationally renowned speakers such as Seattle’s Mayor Greg Nickels, Billy Frank Jr, Amory Lovins, Amy Goodman, Frances Moore-Lappe, Paul Stamets and Jim Hightower
  • Fair-Trade and Eco-Shopping
  • Green Careers and Education Area
  • King County and City of Seattle Environmental Pavilions
  • Organic Valley Green Kids Zone
  • Socially Responsible Investing

DC Gets the Green Vote
A Record-Breaking 31,000 Attend District’s Fourth Green Festival

Washington, DC (October 24, 2007) – Green Festivals, a joint project of Global Exchange and Co-op America, celebrated its fourth year in Washington DC with an unprecedented event attendance of 31,000.  The world’s largest and most authentic green living event took place on October 6th and 7th at the Washington Convention Center.

For two days, more than 400 green businesses, 150 speakers, dozens of community groups and thousands of DC area residents came together to explore and celebrate what’s working in our communities – for people, for businesses and for the environment. Attendees were invited to check out what’s on the horizon for renewable energy, socially responsible investing, eco-fashions, green building, eco-friendly travel, organic foods, sustainable business and more.

Consumers representing all shades of green were given the opportunity to shop with their conscience and “vote with their dollars” as they either began or furthered a movement towards a sustainable lifestyle and a just and inclusive green economy.

“Our goal is to provide a two day party with a purpose, engaging attendees with a truly extensive green event to enlighten and educate the public on greener ways of living” says Co-op America Executive Director Alisa Gravitz. “The tremendous growth in attendance at Green Festivals reflects people’s hunger to learn about the movement toward more sustainable lifestyles – and how much fun it is to go green.”

While most events and tradeshows are highly wasteful, Green Festival is an exemplary model of environmental responsibility. As it does every year, the 2007 Washington DC Green Festival demonstrated its commitment to walking its green talk by reusing, recycling or composting 90% of all show waste.

Showcasing the Growth of the Green Economy PDF Print E-mail

Keith Ware dressed naturally to set up his booth at the Green Festival. He wore an organic cotton hooded jacket, organic cotton blue jeans and organic hemp work boots, the soles of which are made from recycled surgical gloves. He was not, however, wearing his organic cotton underwear.

"That's not to say I don't own some," he said.

Ware is one of the owners of Eco-Green Living, a Logan Circle store that sells organic and fair-trade products such as teas, hemp boots and even the makeshift floor he was setting up, which was made from Marmoleum -- a combination of linseed oil, wood flour, rosin, jute and limestone. He was an exhibitor over the weekend at the Green Festival, which drew crowds of people to the Washington Convention Center to celebrate light bulbs that last 60,000 hours, investment funds targeting socially responsible companies and paper made from elephant dung by a company called Mr. Ellie Pooh.

The show, the third in the District, grew from 250 exhibitors in the first year to more than 350. Although some exhibitors were selling products, the chief intention of the show was to develop the industry by connecting the principles and products of green businesses with mainstream customers.

“We had a great time! I particularly enjoyed the natural home aisles! It is really hard to find alternatives for home improvement stuff and this gave me a boat-load of resources!”
LG, Oakland, CA

Woman to Man at Next Table: "I'm glad to see there are normal people here."

I want to add my praise. Just a spectacular event! The speakers were relevant – the booths framed a new world. There was great vision for the future. Everyone was together, working hard, believing in making it happen. Congratulations!
DL, Columbus OH

The food was great (free Clif bars and Stonyfield yogurts, not to mention the ice cream and vegetarian food we bought from a vendor to go with the Organic beer and wine we enjoyed tasting!); we bought some stuff (stationary products made from old maps); and we were amazed at how successfully the event's recycling was orchestrated. Picked up lots of good information!
AS, Washington DC

As an exhibitor at the Festival, I have one main regret: I didn't see any other booths or one single event/speech/presentation. Why? Because we were slammed! Never a moment's rest with a regular line of engaged and motivated guests. By all indicators, the Festival seems a smashing success..
JH, San Francisco CA

Congratulations on a fantastic success with the Green Festival!! It was truly amazing how many people were there, and the positive energy that was generated behind it! Anacostia Watershed Society enjoyed being there on Sunday, and met many interested and committed people.
JC, Baltimore MD

The Oil Party’s Over-It’s Time To Clean Up

Black Gold, Texas Tea, Crude Oil. For better or for worse, that’s what makes our modern economy tick. But more and more experts are positing that our oil economy’s time is running short. And it is not just the political Cassandra’s singing this song, even major energy corporations like BP and Shell are positioning themselves to take advantage of the coming post-petroleum economy. They know there is an alternative to oil dependence. It is called the Green Economy where alternative energy offers a bridge to an economy based on solar, wind, geothermal, biomass and biofuel energy instead of fossil fuels.
