Steve Coleman is the co-founder and director of Washington Parks & People, DC's award-winning grassroots alliance of community park partnerships. Parks & People has dramatically transformed once crime-ridden innercity DC parks from Meridian Hill/Malcolm X to Marvin Gaye Park, galvanizing tens of thousands of people to rebuild green communities in the heart of the city.
In the process, Parks & People has advanced a new approach to
hands-on civic environmental action that is now being used to help
advance the Cool Capital Challenge, the DC region's model
one-billion-pound carbon dioxide diet. Driven by its motto, "We Have
the Power," and its call to action, "Cool Now," Cool Capital
(www.coolcapital.org) is an unprecedented partnership of businesses,
institutions, congregations, and communities working together on
immediate direct action to reverse the climate crisis. A range of
other cities are already beginning to adopt the Cool Capital model.
The Cool Capital Model for Fighting Climate Change
Cool Capital is an unprecedented partnership of businesses,
institutions and communities working together to reverse the climate
crisis. Tens of thousands of people have transformed DC’s once
crime-ridden, inner-city parks into flourishing green communities. This
approach to hands-on civic environmental action is now being used to
advance the Cool Capital Challenge, DC’s one-billion-pound carbon diet,
a model already spreading to other cities.
