For A Second Consecutive Year, Green Festival Flourished in the Tri-State Area on Earth Day Weekend

Green Festival, the nation’s largest, longest running green consumer event, returned to New York for an energizing and powerful show with a feast for all senses and everything green.

POST-EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

WHO: (Includes)Reverend Billy and the Earthalujah Choir, Sara Moulton, Parsons the New School for Design, Eileen Fisher, FORD Motor Company, Frances Moore Lappé, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr., Mark Terceck and John Perkins

HIGHLIGHTS:

The biggest “party with a purpose” brought out a crowd of more than 20,000, and opened with a jubilant EARTHALUJAH from sustainable preacher Reverend Billy and his Earthalujah Choir.

This year’s festival features engaging and inspiring panel discussions with such notable experts as Sara Moulton of Good Morning America and PBS, who led a lively locavore discussion and recipe demonstration in front of a standing room-only crowd. Jennifer Welser of Je and Jo Comestibles led the audience through making an easy organic inside-out ice cream sandwich, and Sacha Dunn of Common Good and Co. shared her earth-friendly (and budget-friendly) tips for creating simple home cleaning products.

The Green Festival marketplace was host to over 250 exciting eco-friendly companies, including many innovative local and national businesses – such as vegan bath products from the Fanciful Fox, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, Daiya Vegan Cheese, eco-friendly fashion from Tomi Otee, Eco-Friendly Printer, Joulebody, Theo Chocolate, Emmy’s Organics, and more.

Green Festival set up the catwalk for two sustainably chic and innovative fashion collections.  On Sunday, celebrated designer, Eileen Fisher presented a unique experience from her coveted “the & Collection” modeled by 8 eco influencers in addition to her sustainable initiative “We’d Like Our Clothes Back Now Thanks Very Much.”  On Saturday, students from Parsons the New School for Design showcased their avante-garde collection, refashioned from landfill-bound materials.

It was Happy Hour all weekend long in the exclusive organic beer and wine pavilion, as attendees mixed and mingled while enjoying the best in organic and sustainable beverages.

Green Festival partner FORD Motor Company held their Community Green Grant competition at the Javits Center for five local non-profits to have the chance to win $5,000 towards their cause. This year’s winner was the New York Coalition for Healthy School Lunches. Four runners-up each received $1,000.

FORD also provided attendees the opportunity to test drive their latest innovative line of hybrid and electric vehicles in their Ride and Drive Experience.

The Clif Bar Bike Valet was just as bustling, with many attendees riding their bikes to the festival and parking with the valet for free admission.

Green Festival’s Resource Recovery team recovered an impressive 94% of all trash from the weekend festival. Trash was diligently sorted, recycled, and diverted from landfills. It’s always the goal of Green Festival to be as close to zero waste as possible.

The Green Festival team is currently in preparation for the Chicago Green Festival coming up on May 18th and 19th at the famed Navy Pier.

Dhana EcoKids to Attend NYC Green Festival

Tween Organic Fashion Giveaway Planned for Booth #807

Mill Valley, CA, April 1, 2013 – Award winning sustainable clothing manufacturer Dhana EcoKids will offer a unique product at the New York Green Festival at Javits Center North April 19-21: organic and sustainable fashion for children ages 4-12. The company will be holding drawings for their 100% organic “Tree” t-shirts (featuring tree images made up of 10 inspiring words) throughout the second two days of the festival, along with a grand prize drawing for $100 worth of Dhana EcoKids merchandise on Sunday, April 21st.

Dhana EcoKids fills a gap in the market for organic clothing, offering hard-to-find eco-couture for children who have outgrown their toddler clothing, but are not yet big enough to wear adult fashions. “There was almost nothing available for older kids,” recalls the company’s founder and CEO, Shamini Dhana, of her efforts to find sustainable clothing for her first born child in 2008. “So I decided to do something about it. Older kids deserve the comfort of organic clothing, too! And it’s important for them to understand the connection between the planet’s health and the clothes they wear.”

Raised in Singapore and possessing family and business contacts spanning the earth, the former banker-turned-designer drew on her international connections to create a brand that is truly global. Dhana EcoKids clothing incorporates artwork from international artists, inspired by different cultures around the world. The company also partners with non-profits, including 1% for the Planet and the arts education organization Kiddo!, to help contribute to planetary culture and sustainability. Dhana hopes that her brand will empower kids to become responsible citizens of the world through the clothes they wear.

The Dhana EcoKids Spring/Summer 2013-14 Collection includes a selection of girls’ tops and dresses, along with boys’ polos, tanks and t-shirts, all made sustainably from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and eco-friendly dyes and manufactured ethically and with respect for both people and planet.

In keeping with the company’s tagline, “We’re Wearin’ the World,” each Dhana collection incorporates art from a different international artist, inspired by a particular place or culture on Earth. The 2013-14 Collection features the work of Irish artist Elaine Murphy, who chose to depict the wildflowers and renewable energy scene of California. The collection gained international attention last December, when Dhana EcoKids was selected as one of the top 3 companies worldwide for innovation in children’s wear at the 2012 SOURCE Awards for Sustainable Fashion.

Dhana EcoKids fashions can be seen online at www.DhanaEcoKids.com, and will be available for viewing and purchase at Booth #807 at this year’s Green Festival. CEO Shamini Dhana will be available to speak to the press the afternoon of Thursday, April 18th- Sunday, April 21st. Wholesale buyers are encouraged to visit Booth #807 during the Green Festival’s NYC B2B Green Trade Day on Friday, April 19th, free to qualified personnel.

National Coalition Calls on Hershey and Mars to Label GMOs in Chocolates, Other Candy … Or Get Them Out Completely.

Washington DC — February 7, 2013 — What will you get for your loved one this Valentine’s Day?   If genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in chocolates are not on your shopping list, you will want to know about GMO Inside’s new push to get the nation’s largest candy manufacturers—Hershey and Mars—to break up with GMOs in 2013.

GMO Inside, a campaign dedicated to advancing the right of consumers to know whether or not foods are genetically engineered, is calling on Hershey and Mars to either stop putting GMOs in Valentines candy and other products … or to start labeling the products as containing GMOs.

Hershey and Mars combined comprise nearly 70 percent of the U.S. chocolate market.   The two companies are not shy about their love affair with GMOs; together they spent more than a million dollars to oppose GMO labeling in California in the November 2012 election.  Hershey is reported to have spent $518,900 to defeat Prop 37 and Mars spent $498,350.

The reason these companies oppose GMO labeling so strongly is due to the fact that GMO ingredients are in their sweets; a label would surely make a consumer think twice about eating their favorite candy bar.

For example, these popular candies contain the following GMO-risk ingredients:

Reese’s Peanut Butter filled Hearts (Hershey) contain sugar, soy lecithin, and cornstarch
Hershey Hugs contain sugar, soy lecithin and corn syrup solids
Valentine’s Colored M&M’s (Mars) contain sugar, soy lecithin, cornstarch, and corn syrup
Valentine’s Snickers (Mars) contain soy lecithin, corn syrup, sugar, and partially hydrogenated soybean oil

GMO Inside also released a “Valentine’s Day Villains” shopping guide for consumers who want to avoid GMOs treats for their Valentines.  Go to www.GMOinside.org to get a list of candies to watch out for and also some non-GMO alternatives for you loved one

Genetically modified organisms have never been proven safe for consumption, and a growing body of studies is raising concerns around the health effects of eating them. GMOs are also increasing the use of toxic herbicides and causing harm to farmers in the US and abroad.

In Europe, where genetically modified ingredients are already required to be labeled, Hershey and Mars have adapted their recipes to formulate Kisses and M&Ms without GMOs.  According to Confectionary News, Hershey products made for distribution in Europe will be formulated without GMO ingredients, in order to meet the requirements of major retailers which ban the sale of products with genetically modified ingredients and to satisfy increasing consumer concern about the safety of GMOs.

“Unless you can buy Hershey or Mars products in Europe, there is a high chance you could be giving your Valentine a treat with GMOs that endanger their health and the environment,” said GMO Inside Campaign Director Elizabeth O’Connell, “To be safe, you should choose organic certified or Non-GMO Project Verified chocolate to show the loved ones in your life you really care.”

Beyond the issue of GMOs, Hershey also has problems with child labor in the cocoa it sources.  Though the company committed to certify its supply chain as 100 percent sustainable in October of 2012, there has been no further information about how the company plans to deliver on its promise to remove forced child labor from its supply chain over the next seven years.

“Consumers have a choice — there is delicious chocolate from companies that are organic or verified through the Non-GMO Project, said Alisa Gravitz, president of Green America.  “And you can make it doubly sweet by also looking for fair trade options.  You’ll be showing your sweetheart you care in every way.  Refuse to buy GMO-laden chocolate this Valentine’s Day.”

Consumers interested in speaking out to Hershey and Mars can sign an online petition atGMOinside.org.  Consumers interested in non-GMO chocolate choices can use GMO Inside’s Valentine’s Day Villains shopping guide.

There will also be various actions on Facebook over the next week so be sure to friend GMO Inside on Facebook to follow along – https://www.facebook.com/GmoInside.

Momentum builds for Forward on Climate rally against the Keystone XL pipeline

Momentum builds for Forward on Climate rally against the Keystone XL pipeline

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Daniel Kessler, 350.org, dk@350.org, 510-501-1779; Eddie Scher, eddie.scher@sierraclub.org; 415-815-7027

forward_on_climateOAKLAND, CA, January 23, 2013 — Encouraged by President Obama’s comments on climate change at his inauguration and wowed by strong recruitment numbers, opponents of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline are getting excited for the largest climate rally in US history: Forward on Climate, scheduled for Sunday, February 17 in Washington, DC. (1)

On Monday, at his inauguration, President Obama reaffirmed his commitment to tackling the climate crisis: “We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations.”

In response, Bill McKibben, founder or 350.org, said: “We’ll do all we can to help the president realize his goals, and trust he’ll begin by blocking the Keystone XL pipeline, whose approval would make a mockery of his rhetoric.”

Last week two new reports showed that the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline would damage the climate much more than previously thought. A Pembina analysis showed how Keystone XL is an integral part of the industry’s plan to nearly triple tar sands production by 2030 (2); and an Oil Change International report showed that proven tar sands reserves of Canada will yield roughly 5 billion tons of an oil processing byproduct, known as petcoke – enough to fully fuel 111 U.S. coal plants to 2050. (3)

A collection of the country’s top climate scientists last week also sent the president a letter asking him to reject tar sands oil and the Keystone XL pipeline. (4)

This Friday, in an unprecedented unified action among Indigenous Nations, farmers and ranchers, and business and environmental leaders, attendees at the Protect the Sacred event in South Dakota will sign an International Treaty to block the Keystone XL pipeline. (5)

“Obama’s legacy as 44th President of the United States rests squarely on his leadership in the face of the climate crisis,” says Michael Brune, Executive Director of the Sierra Club. “Only the President of the United States has the power to lead an effort on the scale and with the urgency we need to phase out fossil fuels and go all in on clean, renewable energy sources. He can start immediately by rejecting the dangerous Keystone XL pipeline.”

The Forward on Climate rally comes as pressure mounts on the Administration to take strong climate action in the president’s second term. After a year of record heat and drought, calls for action are coming from all over the country. Newspapers such as the New York Times and The Washington Post, and think tanks like the Center for American Progress, are making it plain that the president must act now to avert the worst of effects from global warming.

Frances Beinecke, President, Natural Resources Defense Council: “The President has rightly called America to action against the climate chaos that is sweeping our nation and threatening our future. Now, we’re looking forward to seeing the president’s words turned into action. He can do so by rejecting dirty fuels projects such as the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline and by starting to cut carbon pollution from power plants that are major causes of climate destruction.”

Nantes and the Pays de la Loire Region of France Committed to Sustainable Development and Marine Renewable Energy

By Karen Ferrel, Staff Writer

Representatives from the French region, Pays de la Loire and its capital Nantes have been seen walking around this year’s San Francisco Green Festival. The French region is strongly committed to sustainable development and marine renewable energy in particular.

Following the example of Denmark and Germany, France has recently decided to start to convert offshore winds to energy. The coastal region of the Pays de la Loire is a key geographical area for the development of this new industry expected to create 8,000 jobs within 10 years. It hosts the world’s largest offshore wind turbine project.

In addition to existing expertise in the shipbuilding industry, there are already several small and medium-sized businesses actively involved this new market. The region also benefits from relevant training with 77 schools, 6300 students and apprentices specializing in metallurgy and electricity, and 2,000 graduate students in engineering.

Nantes, the Region’s capital, has been nominated the 2013 European Green Capital, following Stockholm and Hamburg. The city has taken a leadership role in alternative transportation, the fight against global warming, water conservation, creating green areas in the heart of the city, and encouraging citizen participation in major public decisions.

By participating in the Green Festival, the team from Nantes intends to make contacts for their own conferences in 2013 that will promote the Green Capital to Europe and to the world: the World Green Infrastructure Congress (September 9-13), the Ecocity conference (September 25-27), the 3rd Annual Conference of the Mexico City Pact (230 cities worldwide including Copenhagen, Dakar, Mexico, engaged in the reduction of greenhouse gas).
