Uhuru Pies 2010 – Thirty Years of Community Based Fundraising

Oakland, CA- October 14, 2010 Maureen Wagener, coordinator of the 30th year of Uhuru Pies™ holiday sale fundraiser invites the public to participate in this years fundraising efforts.

“It’s simple. We are asking individuals, organizations and businesses from the community at large to make a pledge to sell 10 pies to friends and family, coworkers and colleagues between November 19th and November 24th before the Thanksgiving holiday,” Wagener says. “This is a way to support the sustainable economic development projects led out of the Uhuru House African community centers in Oakland, CA and St. Petersburg, Florida.” she adds.
In 2009, Uhuru Pies fundraising contributed to the construction and development of a commercial kitchen in the national Uhuru House of St. Petersburg, Florida. Nearing its completion this year, the commercial kitchen provides community-based caterers and gives new food vendors access to a professional facility to develop their businesses.

In 2010, Uhuru Pies helped fund the second phase of institutions initiated by the African People’s Education and Defense Fund, which included the development of a professional recording studio also under the roof of the national Uhuru House in St. Petersburg, Florida. The studio cultivates the enormous cultural talent and musical creativity of the local African community. African artists will have an outlet to experiment, produce, and distribute their own works, raising and reinvesting resources back into the community and contributing to the sustained mission of the APEDF.

Uhuru Pies offers five gourmet pie flavors on sale for $12 – $20 each in Northern California and in the St. Petersburg/Tampa area. All proceeds benefit projects of sustainable black community economic development.

There are a number of ways individuals can participate in the holiday sale fundraiser:
• Farmers and growers and food distributors can donate quality, locally grown ingredients.
• Individuals can join in selling pies, – Schedule a pie tasting, have an Uhuru Pies outreach organizer present to your group or coordinate a pie sales table in your part of the Bay Area.
• Trained and aspiring bakers: learn about the Uhuru Pie Baking Academy™. Coordinate hundreds of baking volunteers to bake perfect pies every time, or volunteer your facility and team to make delicious pies.
• Individuals with graphics skills or marketing expertise, build your portfolio promoting Uhuru Pies.
Anyone interested in being a part of Uhuru Pies is invited to join the team or become an individual contributor. Contact Uhuru Pies, can call 510-625-1106 or 510-851-4492 or send e-mail to oaklandpies@apedf.org. More information available at www.uhurupies.org.
