Ford's Impressive Sustainability Strategy

“For years, Toyota has been the darling of the green business world. The hybrid Prius was a legitimate business home run (2 million sold), and it helped both differentiate Toyota’s brand as the market innovator and propel Toyota to unprecedented profits. But now the company faces renewed competition for the title of green auto leader.

In the last couple of years, every auto giant has launched alternative vehicles, which they’ve been touting aggressively at the current Detroit Auto Show (see my newsletter on the different strategies the big companies are pursuing). GM’s “extended range” Chevy Volt and Nissan’s all-electric LEAF are potential blockbusters, with strong early sales and serious buzz.

But I want to focus on Ford. The company announced its own electric vehicle, the Ford Focus EV, at the recent Consumer Electronics Show.”

Monsanto’s Roundup Triggers Over 40 Plant Diseases and Endangers Human and Animal Health

“While visiting a seed corn dealer’s demonstration plots in Iowa last fall, Dr. Don Huber walked passed a soybean field and noticed a distinct line separating severely diseased yellowing soybeans on the right from healthy green plants on the left (see photo). The yellow section was suffering from Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS), a serious plant disease that ravaged the Midwest in 2009 and ’10, driving down yields and profits. Something had caused that area of soybeans to be highly susceptible and Don had a good idea what it was.”

TED Talk: Zoe Weil on Shaping The World Through Our Classroom

“Zoe Weil is the president of Institute for Humane Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a humane world through teaching principles of living a more meaningful life. In other words, we can create a sustainable, thriving world if we learn to better use our skills of integrity, compassion, healthful lifestyles and so on. While it sounds a little esoteric, or worse, all-out crunchy, what the IHE teaches makes a lot of sense. In a recent TEDx event, Zoe Weil explains exactly how such a stance on education can lead us to a healthier planet.”

Video Interview: Numi Tea CEO Ahmed Rahim

“The food industry is one that has embarked upon revolutionary changes in the areas of wellness and sustainability. There are many paths to entry for smaller companies and innovative entrepreneurs. For example, a USDA report entitled Oversight of the National Organic Program estimates that organic product sales reached approximately $25b dollars annually in 2008 with projected 14-21% annual revenue growth. And smaller, innovative companies have a real opportunity as the food industry’s major players confront issues of credibility as their traditional customer base, along with government regulators, raise such telling questions as why there are no ribs in the McDonald’s McRib or no real maple in their Fruit and Maple Oatmeal. Rapid and profitable business success is an opportunity in the food industry that is being realized by credible companies selling authentic products.”
