Happy 10th Birthday for Green Festival!

TreeHugger is excited to be partnering with Green Festival this year. We’ll be bringing you some fun and interesting updates from the events, starting in San Francisco April 9 – 10. To help get things started, here’s an introduction from Dr. Kevin Danaher, a Founder of Global Exchange, TransFairUSA and the Green Festivals.

They say time flies when you’re having fun. That certainly has been the case with the Green Festivals, a joint project of Global Exchange and Green America, with our partners at Seven Star Events.

As we go into our tenth year, these parties-with-a-purpose have now reached more than one million people, inspiring them with green/eco alternatives to the nature-destroying corporate model.

This year we are expanding to New York (October 1-2), and Los Angeles (October 29-30), so if you know people who we should be in touch with–either for our Host Committees or to speak or exhibit or volunteer at the events–please let us know.

Our combination of green enterprise and radical education has struck a chord with the hippest people — those who are trying to be good ancestors by creating a sustainable economic model to ensure that our grandchildren will not inherit a burnt cinder of a planet.

The green economy is the only sector that tells people: “consume less, and consume consciously, instead of unconsciously.” We are not so naïve as to think that we can “buy our way to salvation.” But people do have a number of basic needs for food, clothingshelter, health, and fun! And it is better to meet these needs by supporting enterprises run by people who share our values of social justice and environmental restoration.

Yes, there is green-washing out there. But consumers are increasingly hip to companies that cannot back up their green claims with tangible proof. And the great thing about Green Festival is that we use Green America‘s standards for social and environmental responsibility to screen all of the exhibitors – so there is no green-washing at the Green Festivals.

Those of us promoting fair trade and the green economy understand that we possess a market advantage over the mainstream corporate products. Each product we sell is actually two products: the product itself and the story of who produced it – what company stands behind the product — and how it was produced. Whereas the model of the big corporations is to hide their impact on workers and the environment, the green companies treat workers, the environment their communities and their customers as stakeholders with them in creating a better future.

Plus, there is a simple supply-and-demand factor working in favor of the green economy. As natural resources get depleted, the profitability of saving resources and developing renewable substitutes goes up. So we are seeing a steady shift of capital, policy and jobs in a green direction. Sure, the system is not shifting as quickly as we would like it to, but it is shifting nonetheless.

Those of us who have a radical critique of capitalism as practiced by the transnational banks and corporations are in the best position to redefine enterprise in a triple-bottom-line direction. For 22 years now, my organization, Global Exchange, has pioneered the non-profit enterprise model, subordinating profits to social justice and environmental restoration. In developing this new model of enterprise there are two questions that must be answered correctly: (1) In the production of your goods and services did you exploit people or nature?, and (2) What do you do with the profits, put them into your own pocket or put them back into the education work?

The ten years of Green Festivals have given us a large network of green companies and tens of thousands of grassroots supporters. So now it is time to build on this network to create a permanent Green Festival–GreenMart, the first eco-mall convergence platform that will be one-stop shopping for the green economy. If you are interested in learning more about this new venture, don’t hesitate to contact me at 415-255-2341 or Kevin(at)globalexchange(dot)org. Looking forward to seeing you at Green Festival this year!

Generation Hot: Impact of climate change on children

“A new father comes to terms with his hopes and fears for his daughter’s future with climate change, and the solutions he came across.

This story originally aired on PRI’s Living on Earth.

Being a parent these days is tough. There’s a lot to worry about: Will my kids get jobs, can we afford their education? And now: How will climate change affect their future? Until journalist Mark Hertsgaard became a dad, he didn’t take this global issue personally. Now he does.

Hertsgaard’s new book, “Hot: Living Through the Next Fifty Years on Earth,” tells the story of a new father’s attempt to come to terms with his fears and his hopes for the future. Recently on Living on Earth, he talked about what led him to write the book.”

80’S TV HERO MACGYVER INSPIRES KIDS IN SAN FRANCISCO SCHOOLS

Join Matthew Jervis of MacGyver Class! and build with recycled materials in the Green Kids' Zone at San Francisco Green Festival Sat & Sun April 9-10 at 12:30 pm

New arts-based after-school program speaks directly to President Obama’s educational goals around building 21st-century skills

San Francisco, California––Mission Graduates is pleased to announce a collaboration with Matt Jervis, creator of the innovative new educational program MacGyverClass. Designed to help kids lead, build confidence and exercise 21st century problem-solving skills,MacGyverClass is a creative curriculum that responds to multiple learning styles and encourages joyful learning through dynamic after-school sessions. MacGyverClass pushed children to devise creative solutions to whimsical challenges using recycled and other “cast-off” materials. Challenged, for example, to build “sneakers that you can use for time travel” using egg cartons, duct tape, bottle caps and VHS tape, students respond with finished products that are often beautiful sculptural pieces.

Jeff Feinman, Executive Director of Mission Graduates, observed Matt’s MacGyverClass in its infancy at various Berkeley schools and sought to integrate the project with his own after-school service menu.  Says Feinman, “I was looking to inspire a deep love of learning and to create opportunities for kids to flex problem-solving “muscles” that aren’t always nurtured in traditional, one-size-fits-all school-day classrooms.” One hundred students have registered for MacGyverClass over the past four years and Feinman sees significant growth on the horizon. Because the program aligns strongly with the SFUSD’s new strategic plan, which puts a heavy emphasis on “21st century skills” and “joyful learning,” MacGyverClass was a natural fit for his organization.

Mission Graduates is a nonprofit organization that increases the number of K-12 students in San Francisco’s Mission District who are prepared for and complete a college education.  Through a wide range of in-school and after-school programs, Mission Graduates seeks to transform the culture of the community to one in which college is an everyday expectation. In addition to adding MacGyverClass to their program menu, Mission Graduates is committed to identifying other distribution channels for MacGyverClass, replicating the project using a “train the trainer” model at multiple after-school sites throughout San Francisco.

Concourse Exhibition Center April 9 – 10. This one-of-a-kind weekend

Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Dr. Brent Ridge are not your average couple. They have transplanted themselves from New York City to Beekman Farm in upstate New York, where they are raising 80 goats, two pigs, a dozen chickens and a narcissistic llama. These guys have urban professional backgrounds and they’re now making goat milk soap.

Technically, Josh isn’t new to upstate New York. He was born there, but then raised in rural Wisconsin. He is the New York Times bestselling author of I Am Not Myself These Days and Candy Everybody Wants and also a new book called The Bucolic Plague which is about moving to the farm. He is a monthly columnist for OUT magazine and a contributor to NPR.

Born and raised in North Carolina, Brent is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He was Vice President of Healthy Living at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, and he writes for care2.com and The Huffington Post.

Brent is described as having a type A personality, while Josh is more laid back. Friends who visit them upstate attest to the difficulties they face trying to live the simple life. Turns out, it’s not so simple.
