Clean Water Startups to Watch in 2012

Heather Clancy of ZDNet has put together a great list of the top start-ups in clean water technology to pay attention to in the upcoming year.

Clancy writes, “After sifting through a number of resources, I’ve come up with this list of start-up or early stage companies that I’ll be watching as closely as possible. All of the companies on this particular to-watch list are focused on technologies for treating wastewater, and all of them have been part of various cleantech innovation competitions this fall.”

The list includes companies specializing in wastewater treatment, water purification, graywater recycling, to name a few. Mentioned are aquaMost, which raised $3 million in a second round of venture capital; Emefcy, which rounded up $10 million in venture funding; and Pasteurization Technology Group, which not only disinfects wastewater but also creates renewable energy in the process.”

Give from the Heart

Mary Rick

Director of Marketing and Community

The Hoop Fund

Because we value our relationships, we want our gifts to be a heartfelt expression.  For most people, this is not an easy task.

We resort to best bets – gift cards, trendy stocking stuffers, and Hallmark.  But it’s actually easier than ever to find gifts with meaning.

Conscious consumers might shop based on ownership type (family-owned), production location (Made in the USA), environmental standards (organic), and labor practices (Fair Trade Certified).

And green gift guides abound! From Green America and Fair Trade USA to the blogosphere. Everyone seems to be getting into the action.

The “One for One” movement is a newly popular option that combines consumption and philanthropy.  Brand leaders include Toms Shoes, FEED, and Better World Books.

With each purchase of shoes, Toms sends a pair of shoes to a child in need. With each purchase of FEED branded bags, the company funds nutritious school meals for malnourished children. For every book purchased on BetterWorldBooks.com, they send a book to someone in need.

The Hoop Fund offers a unique take on this model, combining a philanthropic microloan to the maker with every purchase.   For example, if you buy a sweater on the Hoop, part of your purchase will go to the weaver for a specific project need.  The money is returned to the lender upon repayment.

More and more gift-givers are also opting to send donations instead of stuff and charities of all kinds make it easier to send a donation as a gift.  Universal Giving is a great resource for donation opportunities around the world and 100% of each donation goes directly to the cause.

What’s meaningful to you and your loved ones?

Ford Introduces Gas-Free Focus Electric with 100+ MPGe Expected; Nearly a Third of Lineup Now Offers 40-mpg Model

  • Ford introduces gasoline-free 2012 Focus Electric, expected to be the first five-passenger electric vehicle with a 100 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe)
  • Nearly one-third of Ford’s vehicle lines will feature a model with 40 mpg or more in 2012
  • Focus Electric is the first all-electric vehicle to offer faster charging technology, allowing it to charge in half the time of a Nissan Leaf using 240-volt outlets
  • C-MAX Hybrid is projected to achieve better fuel economy than Toyota Prius v and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid projected to achieve better miles per gallon equivalent in electric mode than Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid. With the C-MAX lineup, Ford becomes the largest hybrid transmission producer in North America

Visit the Ford Electrified Vehicles Media Site for more information.

WAYNE, Mich., Dec. 14, 2011 – Ford’s world-class Michigan Assembly Plant is starting production of the 2012 Focus Electric, expected to be the first five-passenger, all-electric car to achieve more than a 100 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) fuel efficiency rating.

Focus Electric also is the first of its kind to feature faster charging, which will halve Nissan Leaf’s time to fully recharge the battery and help drivers to more than double the expected single-charge range in a busy day of driving and recharging.

The car headlines Ford’s transformed lineup, one-third of which will feature a model with 40 mpg or more in 2012, building on the company’s commitment to give fuel-efficiency-minded customers the Power of Choice.

“The Focus Electric is a shining example of the leading fuel economy Ford is offering for each new vehicle,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “Whether people want a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or full battery-electric vehicle, we have a family of vehicles for them to consider, providing a range of options to best meet their needs and support their driving habits and lifestyles.”

Even with relatively stable gas prices, fuel economy is the top purchase consideration for new vehicles. Nearly 45 percent of customers say fuel economy is their top consideration based on a Ford survey of Americans in 36 cities this fall. Styling is the next consideration, with only 16 percent of study participants saying it is their top purchase driver.

Ford’s rollout of electrified vehicles began in December 2010 with the 2011 Ford Transit Connect Electric – a small commercial van built in collaboration with Azure Dynamics. Ford’s other 40-mpg vehicles include:

  • Focus SFE
  • Fiesta SFE
  • Focus Electric
  • C-MAX Hybrid
  • C-MAX Energi
  • Three vehicles yet to be announced

With 20 years of Ford research and innovation behind the software and hardware technology, the company offers proven engineering and design with Focus Electric. Ford holds approximately 500 patents on the hybrid technology used in the new Focus Electric and its other electrified vehicles.

Faster charging

Focus Electric is designed to offer enough range to cover the majority of daily driving habits of Americans. Its expected 100 MPGe is better than Chevrolet Volt and all electric vehicles with seating for five.

It will be the first electrified vehicle to offer faster charging with 240-volt outlets, which can be installed in customer homes. The battery can be recharged in just more than three hours using a 240-volt charging station, about half the charging time of the 2012 Nissan Leaf.

Faster charging with 240 volts also can extend range as drivers can more quickly recharge between stops – up to 30 miles per charge hour – so they can more than double the vehicle’s range with multiple charging stops during a busy day of driving.

A unique value charging feature, powered by Microsoft, will help owners in the U.S. charge their vehicles at the cheapest utility rates, lowering the cost of ownership.

Elec-tech

Focus Electric introduces new features and technologies – including a unique version of the MyFord Touch® driver connect system especially for electric vehicles and a smartphone app called MyFord® Mobile that helps plug-in owners control their vehicles remotely.

The sleek and stylish five-door hatchback is designed to deliver real driving enjoyment as well. The all-electric powertrain and single-speed transmission provide immediate responsiveness and smooth acceleration when the driver steps on the accelerator, up to a top speed of 84 mph.

The Focus Electric is a dynamic driver’s car, sharing the steering, handling and braking feel with the agile, sporty, fuel-powered Focus models upon which it’s based. At the same time, the absence of a gasoline or diesel engine and outstanding aerodynamics lead to a remarkably quiet, comfortable in-car experience.

A limited number of Focus Electrics will first be available in California and the New York/New Jersey areas. Availability of the Focus Electric will expand in 2012 to the remaining 15 launch markets as production ramps up.

The 19 launch markets also include Atlanta; Austin and Houston, Texas; Boston; Chicago; Denver; Detroit; Los Angeles; San Francisco; San Diego; New York; Orlando, Fla.; Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz.; Portland, Ore.; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Richmond, Va.; Seattle; and Washington, D.C.

Plus, 50 percent of the parts arriving for the all-new Focus are packed in cardboard, are carefully collected, sorted and recycled, as is the bubble wrap, the Styrofoam and the water bottles used by employees.

How Big Oil's Back Room Dealing with the GOP Revived the Keystone XL

This is not what democracy looks like, to revise the chant embraced by Occupy Wall Street. After a popular movement rose up against the proposed Keystone XL project–over a thousand people were arrested at one protest outside the White House, and 12,000 people joined hands around it at another-president Barack Obama announced that he would delay the tar sands pipeline until another environmental review was carried out.

That makes sense. People demonstrate vocal opposition to a measure, politicians respond. Cause and effect. It is, if I might be so bold, how democracy is supposed to work. So why is the tar sands pipeline back in the game? Why are Republicans suddenly fighting to get a measure approving the Keystone XL tacked onto an otherwise bipartisan payroll tax cut bill? One main reason: The oil industry wanted them to.

Stalled NYC construction sites repurposed with gardens, temporary stores

“A remnant of the Great Recession is hiding behind a paint-splattered wall in Chinatown, in an empty lot where a building was supposed to rise into the sky.

The plywood barely conceals the mess behind it: a pile of cement blocks and tangled metal and empty bottles of beer. It is, in short, exactly the sort of place that draws the ire of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.

“There’s a lot of bad things that happen in stalled construction sites,” says Stringer, whose office issued a report earlier this year cataloguing the more than 600 stalled sites that are scattered throughout New York City. “Especially if everybody sort of ignores the site and lets it grow in a very unpleasing way.”

Instead of allowing these lots to become eyesores, some developers are coming up with creative ways to use them temporarily until construction can begin. Grow vegetables in milk crates? Sure. Sell doughnuts out of a shipping container? In New York City, where open space is a precious commodity, just about anything goes.”

L.A. calls for end to 'corporate personhood'

“At a packed City Council meeting that included remarks from a man in a top hat with fake money tucked in the pocket of his suit, Los Angeles lawmakers Tuesday called for more regulations on how much corporations can spend on political campaigns.

The vote in support of state and federal legislation that would end so-called “corporate personhood” is largely symbolic. But anti-corporate activist Mary Beth Fielder, who spoke in favor of the resolution, called it “a symbol that’s going to be heard around the world.”’

Sow seeds, not greed: Farmers gather on Wall Street

“It’s been a long time since farmers congregated in downtown Manhattan — around 350 years, to be exact. The folks who populate Wall Street and rural America don’t cross paths much these days. It’s easy to forget that Wall Street used to be rural America; in 1644, the area contained so many cows that the Dutch colonists had to erect a cattle guard to keep them from straying. Livestock farmers literally established the boundaries of Wall Street.

Today, the bronze bull — that icon of the OWS movement — is the lone farm animal you’ll find in the financial district. And the barricades are back, but only to keep Zuccotti Park’s mic checkers in check. That surprisingly fertile concrete plaza has yielded a bumper crop of grassroots activists, to the discomfort of (most of) the 1% and the shills who bill them. But the voices of farmers — a.k.a. the 1% that grows the food that 100% of us eat — have been largely missing from this movement to reclaim our democracy, despite the fact that food has become a commodity that enriches a few at the expense of the many.

That all changed this past Sunday, though, when a group of farmers from around the country marched to Zuccotti Park accompanied by their allies: food justice activists, community gardeners, and other advocates for a more equitable, ecologically sound, re-localized food system.

The march, organized by Occupy Wall Street’s food justice committee and Food Democracy Now, began with a rally at La Plaza Cultural Community Garden in the East Village, where hundreds of folks gathered to hear fiddlers and drummers give the event a festive kickoff, followed by a panel of urban and rural farmers.”
