Home-Grown Loofah: Cleaning the Eco-Friendly Way

One of the best parts about DIY is that you are always learning something new. One little tidbit I just learned is that you can grow loofah right in your backyard. I never knew those hard spongy things you use as a body scrub were actually plants, let alone something you could grow yourself.

Local resident Mellenie Runion grows and sells loofah as part of her business,Truly-Life Eco-Friendly Gifts. At the recomendation of a friend, I stopped by her house over the weekend to see what growing loofah was all about.

Summer Eco-Fashion at Green Festival

LOS ANGELES – The nation’s premier green living event comes to Los Angeles October 29-30 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. This year, Green Festival celebrates a ten year milestone with over one million attendees in eight cities.

This unique experience celebrates positive solutions working in our communities.  It is where people come to meet renowned authors, actors, visionaries and community leaders; shop with hundreds of green businesses; participate in DIY workshops; enjoy live music and local vegan and vegetarian cuisine; and join friends at the organic beer and wine garden.

“In Mayor’s Villaraigosa ongoing commitment to make Los Angeles one of the world’s Greenest Cities,  he is happy to welcome Green Festival  to Los Angeles and looks forward to opening the festival on October 29th, says Romel Pascual, Deputy Mayor of Environment for Los Angles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa.

Ten stages and pavilions will host more than 125 inspirational and educational speakers and teachers, including: Dolores Huerta, Amy Goodman, Tom Hayden, Marianne Williamson, Rev. Lennox Yearwood and the Hip Hop Caucus, John Perkins, Starhawk, Mark Hertsgaard, David Korten, Jeffrey Smith, Jodie Evans and many more.

Spanish language programming will include Latino cooking demonstrations, greening your home and garden, and activities for the whole family at the Green Kid’s Zone.

“We are excited to host the inaugural Green Festival in Los Angeles and bring Angelenos together to learn how to bring sustainability into their lives,” says Jonathan Parfrey, Climate Resolve Executive Director and a commissioner at the Department of Water & Power Board.  ”For those of us who care about Los Angeles and its future, the Green Festival is a place to talk about climate change and how to prepare to adapt.”

With the holiday season just around the corner, Green Festival is the perfect location to support local businesses all in one location.  The Green Marketplace profiles hundreds of green and socially responsible businesses and organizations. Attendees browse everything from green, non-toxic home furnishings to organic clothing to Fair Trade gifts, children’s toys and much more.

“Whether you go to shop, learn, or experience art and music, Green Festival has it all, it is a great place to celebrate what is working in our communities and find the sustainable solutions that fit your lifestyle,” says Denise Hamler, Green Festival Director.

Green Festival offers something for the entire family. Peruse the latest in earth-friendly casual wear and couture in the eco-fashion show. View socially and environmentally impactful film shorts at the Communications Revolution Stage and the Sierra Club Green Cinema. Discover the latest in environmentally responsible construction materials and methods in the Green Building Pavilion. Move and meditate in the Yoga and Movement Pavilion. Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 Could Clean Up Chemical-Laden Beauty Industry

“From the toxic heavy metals found in popular cosmetic products to the shocking amounts of formaldehyde found in Brazilian Blowout formula , finding harmful chemicals in cosmetics is no new story. In fact, the existing law hasn’t been updated since 1938.

But there’s a new bill in the House of Representatives, called the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011, that will give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority to regulate personal care products, including cosmetics, to ensure they are free of harmful ingredients before they hit the shelves. That is, if it passes.”

2011 Green Festival

“In its 10th year in Seattle the Green Festival celebrated 1 million attendees and all that is good and green. Green Festival is the largest sustainability-focused event in the U.S. and folks learned about everything from GMO’s and organics to solar and urban composting options. People also came out to hear from well-known sustainability experts including Dennis Kucinich, Ed Humes, and Zoe Weil.”

Plant-based, naturally manufactured skin care line, Frangipani, offers tips to help consumers pick their skincare products

The average person is exposed to over 100 chemicals in their morning routine. Frangipani owner, Tracy Land, offers tips to help you pick your products:

  • 1. Read every ingredient on the label. If you can’t pronounce them, don’t buy the product.
  • 2. Water isn’t moisture. Choose another moisturizer if water is the first ingredient.
  • 3. Exfoliate gently. Choose an exfoliant that won’t scratch the skin’s surface. Sensitive? Natural acids will irritate!
  • 4. “Mineral” makeup does not equal safety. Read ingredients thoroughly and choose pressed powders over loose.

Frangipani is a local, natural skin care line. All products are created without the use of harmful chemicals, synthetics, or additives. Instead, all Frangipani products are carefully manufactured with plant-based ingredients and stored in recyclable glass bottles.  The Indianapolis-based company provides an option for consumers to purchase safer face washes, face serums, hand and body lotions, and body oils. All products can be purchased online or at several local retailers including Georgetown Market, Nature’s Pharm, Good Earth Natural Foods, Bloomingfoods, Sunspot Natural Market, Optimal Wellness Center, and Stillpoint Family Chiropractic. Feed Me Green Fest

“Last weekend I had a blast exploring my favorite event of the year, The San Francisco Green Festival! Each Green Festival event features more than 125 speakers and 300 Green Marketplace exhibitors, as well as live music, hands-on workshops, family activities, local vegetarian cuisine and organic beer and wine. This year’s speakers included The Fabulous Beekman Boys, Amy Goodman, Dr. Sharif Abdullah and many more.

I decided a simple write up wouldn’t do. I needed to show the action as it was happening. How better to do that then with twitter and my new beloved picture app Instagram? Here’s my instagram feed from the weekend highlighting all the green conscious fun that unraveled.”

Choices, choices at this weekend's Green Fest

“Red, white, or green? You can go for all three, at least at this weekend’s celebration of all things sustainable. Jon Frey’sbiodynamic vineyard will be pouring away — alongside 190 other exhibitors — at Sat/9-Sun/10′s Green Festival.

If the extensive alphabetical list of vendors gives an apt portrayal of Green Fest’s floorplan, Frey will shack up alongside From War to Peace, a husband-wife jewelry team that creates fashion from dismantled nuclear missile systems. One booth over, Frontier Angel Soap will leave passer-bys sweet-smelling and squeaky clean. Displays of sustainable goodies in other aisles of the Concourse Exhibition Center? Eco-friendly river rafting, passively-powered thermal art, and rolfing, a holistic system of soft tissue massage created by Dr. Ida Rolf.”
