How Blue Fish Studio Prints Tees – Demo at Chicago Green Festival Saturday May 18

Since Blue Fish was founded in 1986, every garment has been been printed by an artisan’s hand. We have developed our own methods of printing, based on traditional block printing and including elements of mono-printing, & hand-painting.

Follow along as our artist creates a gorgeous floral design. Each piece printed at Blue Fish is a one-of-a-kind creation!

Step 1: The back block is sprayed with water before paint is applied.

Step 2: Paint is carefully applied and built up on the block. For a colorful background to print on.

Step 3: Blocks are pressed firmly and evenly by hand.

Step 4: The back block is printed.

Step 5: The top block is painted in swirls of neon paint…quickly.

Step 6: Hand painting is brushed on to create highlights and make the colors pop.

Step 7: The floral block is painted in very dark grey purple.

Oxfam Makes a Difference in Supporting International Food Aid – Leading the Way to a More Sustainable Food Sytem

Written by Oxfam

For many people, buying local makes sense. Whether the goal is reducing your carbon footprint, eating fresher food, or simply supporting the local economy, buying local can be a powerfully cost-efficient way to make an impact. Congress should apply the same logic to saving lives by buying international food aid locally.

Recklessly, current law doesn’t provide the option. Nearly all food aid, used in times of emergency to save lives around the world, must first be purchased from large agribusinesses. Then, it must be shipped overseas on preferred vessels often arriving weeks or months after it is needed. When the food eventually arrives, up to 32% of taxpayer’s initial investment is already lost due to markups and unnecessary overhead costs.

Unnecessary because unlike the US, other food aid donor countries don’t have American red tape and regulations so they are able to get the best possible return on their investments. If a disaster strikes in the north of country where food is available in the south, it’s purchased there. If that’s not an option, another close source is found. The food gets there faster, it costs less, more lives are saved, and an investment has been made in local agriculture that’s proven to reduce the risk of future famine in the region. Buying local makes sense.

Congress has an opportunity to expand the local and regional purchasing of food aid this spring.  The US Senate has already taken the first steps to make this possible in the draft 2012 Farm Bill. Click here to learn more and add your voice to the thousands asking Congress to buy local.

Fixing food aid is just one part of  Oxfam America’s GROW campaign to build a better food system. Nearly one billion, or one in seven, people are hungry because of unjust distribution of land, water, and trading opportunities. The situation will worsen as population grows to nine billion by 2050. We urgently need a food system that sustainably feeds a growing population and empowers poor people to earn a living, feed their families, and thrive.

You can make a difference with Oxfam America. As a leading international poverty relief and development organization working in over 90 countries, our mission is to create lasting solutions to poverty and injustice. There are opportunities to get involved on our website or on the ground doing grassroots advocacy with Oxfam Action Corps Chicago.

Working with partner organizations and individuals like you around the world, we will GROW a fair food system for today and tomorrow.

Chicago (Feb. 14, 2012) Once again, Chicago’s Green Metropolis Fair will bring the local conscious community together on April 14 to officially celebrate Earth Month. This year, the Fair will be held at the Green Exchange Building, 2545 W. Diversey, Chicago’s premier sustainable business community.

“The vision for Green Exchange has always been about being a place to gather and educate people about incorporating sustainable choices into their lives,” says David Baum, owner and developer of Green Exchange. “Green Metropolis Fair exemplifies this opportunity, and we are thrilled to be hosting at GX!”

Master Gardeners and Master Composters from the University of Illinois Extension Service will be on hand to answer your toughest gardening questions, and bedding plants – herbs, vegetables, and flowers ‐ will be available for purchase.

Many local businesses will be part of the Gren Metropolis Fair’s Retail Marketplace, and their special handcrafted, artisanal products, along with fair trade offerings from around the World, will delight the most discerning shoppers. Wonderful local food and drink from a wide variety of purveyors will be available throughout the day, and local services like CSAs (community supported agriculture), nuritionists and chiropractors, and other sustainable businesses will be featured in the table sponsors area.

Yoga, and other wellness activities, and ways to make your home healthier and more energy efficient year round will be spotlighted. Children will enjoy petting rabbits, goats, and other furry creatures. And everyone will appreciate the beautiful new LEED certified Green Exchange Building, with it’s organic sky garden, cistern for recapturing and recycling rain water, green roof, green tenants, and other outstanding features.

Top 10 Climate-Ready Cities in the U.S.

“Cities are now home to a majority of the world’s population and are on the front line in the battle against climate change.  While action at the federal level in the U.S. has been painfully slow, cities in the U.S. are starting to lead by example at a local level. Cities must take an active role in helping their constituents (starting with themselves of course) to mitigate their impact on climate change as well as begin investing in appropriateclimate change adaptation solutions.

I felt that it was time to do some analysis on U.S. Cities which are positioning themselves to be leaders in climate capitalism. I have used proxies and a methodology for ranking the largest cities in the U.S. based on a range of factors including political commitment (as measured by number of commitments the city has made with the U.S. MayorsCarbon War Room Cities ChallengeClinton 40, and ICLEI membership), green buildings (LEED buildings per capita), university leadership (AASHE membership/capita), transit access and use (range of metrics on heavy and light rail usage per capita), clean tech investment (venture funds based in city with clean tech investments in 2010) and energy and GHG emissions (from a range of sources)*.”

Is This Megadairy A Threat to Health and Livelihood of NW Illinois Residents?

“My guest today is Matthew Alschuler, press agent for HOMES [Helping Others Maintain Environmental Standards] Jo Daviess County, in far NorthWest Illinois. Welcome to OpEdNews, Matthew. Your organization is involved in something big right now. Would you like to tell our readers about it?

Sure! In December of 2007, a number of my neighbors learned that A.J. Bos, a California millionaire, was planning to build the largest industrial dairy east of the Mississippi near our homes. Jo Daviess County is dotted with traditional family farms, some of which have been in the same family for over 150 years. Agriculture and tourism are our county’s main industries, and this facility, with its 11,000 cows on a few hundred acres, threatened to destroy them both.”
