Why Kids Need Nature

Shamini Dhana – Founder and CEO, Dhana EcoKids
http://www.DhanaEcoKids.com

All kids love to spend time in nature, climbing, exploring, watching ants and birds, and just plain kicking back and being one with their environment. But did you know that nature is so important to their health that it could even be thought of as a nutrient – a nutrient for which many children today are increasingly at risk of deficiency?

As documented by Richard Luov’s 2007 book, “Last Child in the Woods,” our current generation of children suffers from a condition that has come to be known as “nature deficit disorder.”  Due in part to decreased time spent in outdoor free play, and increased time spent with electronic devices such as cell phones, handheld gaming devices and the internet, observable trends over the past several decades include:

  • Increase in ADD and other attention disorders
  • Increase in childhood obesity
  • Changes in brain structure, including a similarity to the brains of heroin addicts in children who text frequently
  • Increasing rates of childhood anxiety and depression – suicide is now the leading cause of death amongst U.S. college students, according to a 2011 study
  • High rates of risky behavior amongst teens, including unprotected sex and alcohol and illegal drug use

Outdoor, hands-on educational and enrichment activities and exposure to nature are a proven antidote to these negative trends, according to research at the University of Illinois and other institutions. Similar findings about the benefits of arts activities are well documented.

Nature and arts related activities, including “exposure to ordinary natural settings in the course of common after-school and weekend activities” have been shown to:

  • Reduce attention deficit symptoms in children
  • Reduce stress-related behaviors
  • Improve grades and school performance
  • Reduce risk of depression
  • Encourage creativity and a sense of stewardship of nature and community

10 Tips for helping your child connect with Nature

Shamini Dhana, founder and CEO of Dhana EcoKids, is pleased to offer these ten fun ideas for helping you and your children get your daily dose of Nature:

  1. Make Nature a habit – schedule time each day to go outside and see what’s new in your backyard.
  2. When possible, walk or bike when you’re going somewhere. The exercise and fresh, outdoor air will rejuvenate your bodies and spirits. Younger children usually love to ride on their parent’s back or in a bike trailer or trail-a-bike. It’s a great family bonding experience and saves energy, too!
  3. If you have a zoo or botanical garden in your community, invest in a family membership. It’s a cost effective way to take frequent visits and the nature experience won’t be marred by a feeling of pressure to “see it all at once.”
  4. Talk to your child about how he or she comes from Nature and is a part of it. The book “You Are Stardust” by Elin Kelsey is a beautiful introduction to this concept for young children. Myths and legends from indigenous peoples around the world are also winners.
  5. Plan family trips around activities in nature. Camping, beach visits and spelunking are all popular choices.
  6. Encourage your child to draw, paint, write, act, or sing about their experiences in and observations about nature.
  7. Let your child help you pick a non-profit organization to donate to that is helping protect and preserve Nature. As a company, we’ve chosen 1% For The Planet, but there are lots of great ones out there. Follow their activities throughout the year to learn about real-life conservation successes you’ve helped make possible. For hands-on involvement, choose a group with a local chapter.
  8. Create a piece of Nature Art that is recycled and can be sold at a charity event, fundraiser or even make it a gift for a loved one!
  9. Start a Nature journal with your kid. Record the things you discover in Nature as well as any observations and highlights of the day. Include sayings and quotes about Nature that you come across which spark an idea or resonate with your child. These activities help reinforce the Beauty of Nature!
  10.  Keep your child’s at-home environment as natural as possible. Include living plants as part of your household décor. Use natural light when you can. And don’t forget that your child’s largest interface with her environment is her skin. Clothing her in natural, organic apparel that lets her skin breathe and doesn’t expose her to toxic chemicals is a fun and easy way to keep her feeling great!

How does your family enjoy connecting with nature?

Dhana EcoKids to Attend NYC Green Festival

Tween Organic Fashion Giveaway Planned for Booth #807

Mill Valley, CA, April 1, 2013 – Award winning sustainable clothing manufacturer Dhana EcoKids will offer a unique product at the New York Green Festival at Javits Center North April 19-21: organic and sustainable fashion for children ages 4-12. The company will be holding drawings for their 100% organic “Tree” t-shirts (featuring tree images made up of 10 inspiring words) throughout the second two days of the festival, along with a grand prize drawing for $100 worth of Dhana EcoKids merchandise on Sunday, April 21st.

Dhana EcoKids fills a gap in the market for organic clothing, offering hard-to-find eco-couture for children who have outgrown their toddler clothing, but are not yet big enough to wear adult fashions. “There was almost nothing available for older kids,” recalls the company’s founder and CEO, Shamini Dhana, of her efforts to find sustainable clothing for her first born child in 2008. “So I decided to do something about it. Older kids deserve the comfort of organic clothing, too! And it’s important for them to understand the connection between the planet’s health and the clothes they wear.”

Raised in Singapore and possessing family and business contacts spanning the earth, the former banker-turned-designer drew on her international connections to create a brand that is truly global. Dhana EcoKids clothing incorporates artwork from international artists, inspired by different cultures around the world. The company also partners with non-profits, including 1% for the Planet and the arts education organization Kiddo!, to help contribute to planetary culture and sustainability. Dhana hopes that her brand will empower kids to become responsible citizens of the world through the clothes they wear.

The Dhana EcoKids Spring/Summer 2013-14 Collection includes a selection of girls’ tops and dresses, along with boys’ polos, tanks and t-shirts, all made sustainably from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and eco-friendly dyes and manufactured ethically and with respect for both people and planet.

In keeping with the company’s tagline, “We’re Wearin’ the World,” each Dhana collection incorporates art from a different international artist, inspired by a particular place or culture on Earth. The 2013-14 Collection features the work of Irish artist Elaine Murphy, who chose to depict the wildflowers and renewable energy scene of California. The collection gained international attention last December, when Dhana EcoKids was selected as one of the top 3 companies worldwide for innovation in children’s wear at the 2012 SOURCE Awards for Sustainable Fashion.

Dhana EcoKids fashions can be seen online at www.DhanaEcoKids.com, and will be available for viewing and purchase at Booth #807 at this year’s Green Festival. CEO Shamini Dhana will be available to speak to the press the afternoon of Thursday, April 18th- Sunday, April 21st. Wholesale buyers are encouraged to visit Booth #807 during the Green Festival’s NYC B2B Green Trade Day on Friday, April 19th, free to qualified personnel.

Accelerated Learning – What Does it Mean to You?

Accelerated Learning – What Does it Mean to You?

By Michelle LaBrosse, PMP®, Chief Cheetah and Founder of Cheetah Learning, and Kristen LaBrosse, CAPM®, Co-Author

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words, “Accelerated Learning”? Perhaps you imagine a person zipping through a book at a rapid pace, soaking up every fact and concept at lightning speed.  Or perhaps you think of a child genius that graduated from college at the ripe age of 12.

The fact is, the techniques of Accelerated Learning are not only for the rare few that are gifted with a special genius at birth. Accelerated Learning techniques are concepts that anyone can learn with some practice and dedication. The basic idea of Accelerated Learning is to gain the ability to make it faster, easier, and perhaps most importantly, more FUN, to learn and master new skills. There are four basic components to Accelerated Learning.

1. Awareness – Before you are aware that you don’t know something, you are unconsciously incompetent. When you gain awareness of this incompetence, you move up on the learning scale to conscious incompetence. Awareness is the first, and perhaps the most important step, to learning, because when awareness combines with purpose, the drive to learn is then established in your mind.

2. Knowledge – This is where people accumulate facts about a specific topic.  Knowledge of a subject is exhibited by the ability to recall facts and to synthesize the information in the area well enough to answer test questions on the subject, and to communicate about the subject.

3. Skill – This is where people can use what they know to accomplish a specific task.

4. Mastery – This is where people can achieve consistent results with their skills. For example, think about the mastery you have achieved in driving a car. You most likely consistently produce successful results (getting to your destination) each time you drive.  In his book, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell describes the”10,000-Hour Rule” which states that the key to success and mastery in any field is to practice for approximately 10,000 hours.

While many people know that learning requires time and attention to the subject matter at hand, many people tend to forget that it is not just about how hard you study and how many terms you memorize. The key principle to Accelerated Learning is that it is a whole-mind, whole-body, and whole PERSON experience. Below are some important tips to remember to be a successful Accelerated Learner.

Feed Your Mind.  It’s not always intuitive that what you put in your mouth will eventually affect your brain, but if you keep in mind the “whole-body” approach to learning, you will soon see how it is absurd to think that these two things wouldn’t be related.

The good guys in this whole body story are proteins and complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates supply the brain with a steady flow of glucose, the energy that your brain needs to function optimally. Proteins digest more slowly than carbohydrates, and improve the entry of important amino acids into the brain, which are used to synthesize neurotransmitters that are critical for clear thinking.

Refined sugar and caffeine, on the other hand, are the antagonists in the whole-body story. Your brain needs an even supply of glucose to function optimally. Both of these items make your blood sugar balance go haywire, which can affect your ability to concentrate, and can ultimately affect your mood.

Stay Curious! While you’re feeding your mind, don’t forget to feed your curiosity!  One of the worst things we can do as Project Managers is to call ourselves experts. As soon as we grant ourselves “expert” status, we immediately lose the spark that keeps us learning and keeps us looking for new ways to succeed. Make an effort to look at the world with beginner’s eyes.

Move to Groove.   Numerous studies are showing that even mild depression can accelerate mental decline, while excessive stress over time can lead to depression.   When you exercise at least 30 minutes everyday you can keep the blues at bay.   If you find yourself getting down, get up and move.   The more you move, the more you’ll be in your groove.

Take a Purple Break.  Just as your muscles need time to recuperate after a strenuous workout, your brain also needs rest periodically to function optimally. I learned a technique called “purple breaks” from a woman whose dad started an accelerated reading company almost 50 years ago.   A purple break is a 10 to 20 minute break that you take lying down with an eye mask covering your eyes.  When your eyes are in total darkness, the optic nerve has a chance to relax, which in turn relaxes the whole body. During a purple break your main job is to let go of all of the worries and stress of the day and relax.

Now when you see the words, “Accelerated Learning” what comes to mind? Hopefully the image of a healthy diet, exercise, periods of pure relaxation, all interwoven within moments of intense focus on the learning objectives of the skill that you are working to master.

Our Interview With Dr. Devra Davis

“Over her distinguished career as a scientist, professor, and author, Dr. Devra Davis has racked up her share of laurels. With a Ph.D. in science studies and a post-doctoral Master’s of Public Health in epidemiology, Dr. Davis has worked for the National Academy of Sciences, and as a senior advisor in the US Department of Health and Human Services. She was appointed by former President Bill Clinton to his Chemical Safety and Hazard Mitigation Board. And she served as a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2007 along with former Vice-President Al Gore. She was the founding director of what is reputed to be the world’s first Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh, and she currently lectures at Harvard University and Georgetown University.

Her book, When Smoke Ran Like Water (Basic Books, 2002), was a finalist for the National Book Award, and her book The Secret History of the War on Cancer (Basic Books, 2009) is being used at major public health universities, including Harvard, Emory, and Tulane.

But it’s her 2010 release, Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family (Dutton, 2010), that may put her in the history books as the 21st century’s Rachel Carson. In it, Davis examines the controversy surrounding cell phone use and its possible link to brain cancer and other human health impacts.

Like many of us, Davis was initially skeptical about the ties between cell phone use and cancer. But after spending the past seven years poring over the research, she’s become one of the most vocal and credible voices warning about the dangers of cell phone radiation. Green America editor Tracy Fernandez Rysavy talked to Dr. Davis about why she’s concerned about widespread cell phone use, and why it’s so vital to protect our children from cell phone radiation, even in the face of some uncertainty of harm.”

Retired cop honored for decade as teacher's aide

“Weidinger was a police officer for the California State Police and then the California Highway Patrol for a combined 27 years. When he retired, he knew he wanted to work with young children so he could have a greater influence on their morals and academics.

He also knew he wanted to focus on math and science to try to make the subjects more accessible and engaging than when he was in elementary school. The San Francisco Education Fund’s volunteer program connected Weidinger with Cleveland.”
