FOOD FORWARD SPREADS ITS FRUITY LOVE WITH NEW FARMERS MARKET RECOVERY PROGRAM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOS ANGELES – In August and September, 2012 Food Forward, Southern California’s largest harvesting-‐for-‐the hungry non-‐profit, will launch its brand new Farmers Market Recovery Program, at three of the LA-‐ area’s largest and most robust outdoor markets in Santa Monica, Hollywood and Studio City.

Building on Food Forward’s “100% to the hungry” motto, volunteer “Glean Teams” culled from each of the surrounding communities will gather unsold high-‐grade produce directly from farmers at the close of each market, and donate it to agencies within 5-‐7 miles of each market.

Laura Avery, Santa Monica Farmers Market Supervisor says, “The farmers who come to the Santa Monica Farmers Market are pleased to share their fresh picked produce with Food Forward through this exciting and efficient new partnership. We are especially pleased that Step Up on Second, serving homeless and mentally ill individuals living in Santa Monica, who might not otherwise have access to California’s abundant and nutritious fruits and vegetables, will be the recipient of the bounty we have to share.”

With initial funding from The Rosenthal Family Foundation, The Plum Foundation and Jason & Lauren Morphew, Food Forward hopes to scale this pilot program from three markets in year one, to nine markets in year two, and will grow the program from there.

Meg Glasser, Managing Director of Food Forward says, “We are thrilled to be able to work with farmers markets in the same way that we work with local property owners— gleaning excess produce to donate to Los Angeles’ hungry. We also are excited to bring food enthusiast, Mary Baldwin on as the Program Manager and we welcome her to the small but ever-‐growing Food Forward team.”

In addition to collecting unsold produce from farmers, Food Forward’s Glean Team will also be accepting customer and local homeowners’ fresh produce donations during the last two hours of each market (excluding Santa Monica). Gleaning will occur at Santa Monica (Wednesday from 11:30–2); Studio City (Sundays from 11:30-2); and Hollywood (Sundays from 11:30‐2). They will make their first collections beginning in mid-‐August and by the end of September they expect to have all three market recovery sites up and running.

###

Food Forward’s vision is to reconnect our community with the abundance of food already present in our everyday lives, while creating change around the issues of urban hunger, food waste and food justice. 2012 Greening the Culture Campaign Convenes at the Brooklyn Borough Hall February 28, 2012; Discussion of "Jobs and Entrepreneurial Creation in the Urban Market"

Contact: Shermaine Sacasa

Phone: (786) 355-4855

Greening the Culture Campaign PRESS CONFERENCE

NEW YORK – FEBRUARY 6, 2012 In its fifth year, The Greening the Culture Campaign continues to grow in scope, reach and purpose. With a timely and relevant theme of “Jobs and Entrepreneurship Creation in the Urban Market”, the 2012 NYC campaign events, including the Churches Go Green Initiative and the NYC Green Festival, is convening this press conference at The Brooklyn Borough Hall, at 10am on Feburary 28th 2012 to discuss this auspicious partnership intended to bring green jobs to the community. The pinnacle of this campaign, the UrbanGoGreen Green Economy Expo will be at the New York City Green Festival on April 21- 22, 2012 at the Javits Center North. This is made possible by a partnership with Green Festival, a project of Green America and Global Exchange.
The “Greening the Culture” campaign is an ongoing response-driven marketing initiative that uses social media, traditional marketing and special events to effectively educate the urban market about the opportunities and benefits of professional and personal engagement in the green economy. The 2012 “Greening the Culture” campaign is a collaborative partnership between UrbanGoGreen; The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA); The Economic Literacy Coalition and the 2012 NYC Green Festival.

The 2012 “Greening the Culture” campaign seeks to ambitiously tackle unemployment. “said Rev. Dennis Dillon, campaign supporter and one of New York’s leading voices on issues of Black economic empowerment, labor and consumer spending.

Founder and CEO of UrbanGoGreen, Duval Osiris James states, “Green service providers need to market their products and services to reach new communities. Individuals and businesses need to save money and want to upgrade to green products and services. And there are a lot of unemployed people all over New York City that we can put to work right now, helping these green service providers to grow and reach this untapped market.”

In addition to promoting green and clean tech career opportunities and raising public awareness about the personal and community benefits of upgrading to green products and services, the campaign provides green and environmentally friendly companies with effective and affordable opportunities to reach a growing urban eco-conscious community.

A partner in this effort is the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). NYSERDA ’s role in this partnership will be to introduce its energy efficiency programs that help residential owners, renters, the low-income as well as small businesses reduce their energy use. By providing incentives to encourage participation in these programs, end users of NYSERDA’s programs not only reduce their carbon footprint but eventually produce a positive cash flow with work that ends up paying for itself through energy savings. NYSERDA also has a broad network of contracting companies that actually do the work, providing job opportunities as well as business growth. In addition, NYSERDA provides workforce development training on various aspects of the energy efficiency field.
The “Greening the Culture” campaign New York Church launch will bring together public private churches, community based organizations and seasoned environmental professionals.
Guests will include representatives from the fashion, banking, eco-arts, legal, real estate,
telecommunications, nonprofit, and entertainment industries. In addition to providing an
amazing event and serving as a fund-raiser for the organization, this event will showcase the
products and services of local green companies, entrepreneurs and artists.  The Churches Go Green speaking tour and seminar series challenges churches to save money by becoming more energy efficient and encourages their congregations to reduce their carbon footprint. The exhibitions will focus on the economic opportunities in the green economy and how churches can help members of their congregations to tap into the jobs and business opportunities.

UrbanGoGreen will partner with Green America to host the New York City Green Festival and present the UrbanGoGreen 2011 Green Economy Expo at the Jacob Javits Center in Midtown Manhattan.  At NYC Green Festival, attendees learn how to green their homes, find a green job, hear inspiring speakers, participate in DIY workshops, see the latest in eco-fashion, taste delicious local foods, enjoy family activities, see a film festival and shop at the nation’s largest green marketplace with over 250 businesses committed to sustainable practices. UrbanGoGreen’s Green Economy Jobs and Opportunity Expo presents programming for entrepreneurs and citizens seeking
to understand and benefit from sustainable economics and the opportunities of the green economy.

“Do you live in or near Los Angeles or San Francisco? Do you have a great sustainable idea? Do you need a grant to possibly make it happen? Can you articulate that idea in 500 or less words? Well, theFord Motor Company and Green Festival have teamed up to award a grant to a sustainable idea. That idea could very well be yours.

Wangari Maathai: Death of a visionary

“Wangari Maathai’s compelling life story is inextricably linked with the social and political changes that so much of Africa has been through since the idea of throwing off European colonialism began to gain traction shortly after World War II.

Her unique insight was that the lives of Kenyans – and, by extension, of people in many other developing countries – would be made better if economic and social progress went hand in hand with environmental protection.

The Green Belt Movement, which she founded in 1977, has planted an estimated 45 million trees around Kenya.

The straightforward environmental benefits of that would have been important enough on their own in a country whose population has grown more than 10-fold over the last century, creating huge pressure on land and water.

But what made the movement more remarkable was that it was also conceived as a source of employment in rural areas, and a way to give new skills to women who regularly came second to men in terms of power, education, nutrition and much else.

Now, she has succumbed to a battle with cancer. But if cancer was new to her, battle was definitely not; it was a way of life.

Opposing a major government-backed development in Nairobi, she was labelled a “crazy woman”; it was suggested that she should behave like a good African woman and do as she was told.

Her former husband made similar comments when suing for divorce: she was strong-willed, and could not be controlled.

This alone gives some idea of the battles Dr Maathai fought in the politically active phase of her life, which encompassed and indeed wove together the ideals of helping Kenya develop sustainably and helping Kenyan women achieve equality…”

Sierra Club Releases Spanish-Language TV Ad Criticizing Smog Protections Delay

Washington, D.C. — Today the Sierra Club released a Spanish-language television ad rejecting President Obama’s decision to delay long overdue, life-saving protections from smog, an acidic air pollutant that contributes to bad air quality days, asthma attacks and severe respiratory illnesses.

The Spanish-language ad will be broadcast with high saturation in the Reno, Nevada market by Univision and Telemundo stations over the next four weeks to remind the Latino community of how the smog protection delay will threaten their health and their families. The ad will also run in limited rotation in Las Vegas.

“Almost half of Latinos – more than any other constituency in America – live in the areas of the country where the very act of breathing can be dangerous to your health,” said Michael Brune, Executive Director of the Sierra Club.  “Asthma is already considered an epidemic among kids of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent, and exposure to smog, a known trigger of asthma attacks, affects these children with particular intensity.”

“With this ad, we are speaking to some of the families most affected by pollution – Latinos and other communities of color, women and mothers – the folks who need our President to speak up and stand up for them,” said Brune.

The updated Environmental Protection Agency smog protection that President Obama decided to delay would have prevented as many as 12,000 premature deaths and 58,000 asthma attacks each year.  The measure would have saved the country $100 billion in health costs annually.

National polls conducted in recent years have confirmed that Latinos are deeply concerned about environmental and energy issues. The Sierra Club’s first-ever National Survey of Hispanics and the Environment in 2008 found that 83 percent of Latinos believe the environment has an effect on the quality of life of their families.

When asked what environmental issue concerned them the most, more than half answered air and water pollution.

///

The full text of the ad:

The cruel grip of asthma attacks tens of thousands of Hispanic children, putting their American Dream at risk.

President Obama had the opportunity to clean the air but he decided that clean air and our children can wait.

Polluters won, our kids lost.

President Obama, keep your word and protect our kids from contamination.

The Permaculture Movement Grows From Underground

“As a way to save the world, digging a ditch next to a hillock of sheep dung would seem to be a modest start. Granted, the ditch was not just a ditch. It was meant to be a “swale,” an earthwork for slowing the flow of water down a slope on a hobby farm in western Wisconsin.

And the trenchers, far from being day laborers, had paid $1,300 to $1,500 for the privilege of working their spades on a cement-skied Tuesday morning in late June.

Fourteen of us had assembled to learn permaculture, a simple system for designing sustainable human settlements, restoring soil, planting year-round food landscapes, conserving water, redirecting the waste stream, forming more companionable communities and, if everything went according to plan, turning the earth’s looming resource crisis into a new age of happiness.”

VIDEO: Chicago author urges black community to go green

“The green movement is more popular than ever, but experts say socioeconomic barriers like high crime and lower household income keep the trend from catching on in all communities.  When a tankless water heater costs $1,500 more than a standard one, environmentalism often takes a backseat to saving money. Kaitlin Meehan shares one local author’s quest to get the black community to go green.”
