Your participation and support of Revamped will help to celebrate the beauty when people recycle, reimagine and reinvent fashion and art.  Revamped conveys the simple ways that we can have a positive impact on the environment through the creative reuse of our resources.  Revamped shows people that there is an environmentally conscience choice in fashion and art.

An expected 400 people will be introduced to simple ways in which you can have a positive impact on the environment.  From vintage clothing, sustainable textiles, custom refashioned accessories, and recycled fabrics; Revamped inspires guests to reuse materials waiting to be discarded.  We will feature refashioned vintage couture mixed with new developments in eco-textiles.  The designers are filling a gap in the fashion industry and capturing an emerging market of consumers that want to make socially responsible choices.

This year, the event has expanded and local artists have been invited to showcase their recycled artwork.  Guests will be introduced to a new community of local artists and designers that create with the environment in mind.  Artists include Nicole Matta Santos, Carrie Ann Schumacher, Jay Strommen, Maggie Joyce, Charles Heinrich, Tiffany Gholar and Brikena Boci.

Revamped will provide local artists and businesses a way to get involved and support the Chicagoland environmental community.

Our runway show will feature the following designers; Redgi Woods, Imagine Fashions, Rachel Brooks, The Style Cooperative, Alternative Shoes, Corky Couture, and Marta Cebrat-Czernik.

DISPOSABLE CUPS HAVE GOT TO GO

New 3-week community-wide campaign to kick the disposable cup habit

SEATTLE, WA – May 5, 2011 A unique three-week effort to prompt a simultaneous shift in one of our country’s biggest waste problems begins May 21.

Led by New World Habits and supported by coffee shops, non-profits and others, the idea for sudden change is prompted by the theory that any habit can be changed with a concerted three week effort.  This theory will be put to the test in Seattle.

The good news is that you don’t have to give up your coffee.  You simply need to bring your own cup, just as most of us have learned to bring our own bag to the grocery store.

The habit change is relatively painless yet important as Americans throw away almost half a million cups every 15 seconds.  Last year, paper cup usage created close to 400 million pounds of solid waste, and that represents almost a third more than just 4 years earlier!  Our thoughtless disposal of single-use items is getting out of control.  This trend must be reversed.

Via the website, New World Habits will provide the two essential ingredients to facilitate change:  support and a  deadline, not to mention the added incentive of a magnified collective impact that is practically instantaneous.  The website will track the growing numbers.

Participants will join the effort online and then they can watch a change in personal habits become part of a much larger wave of change.  The actual 3-week shift will launch at Green Fest, who is partnering in the initiative along with Sustainable Seattle, Zero Waste Seattle and other organizations.   Equally important is the collaboration of coffeehouses, including Caffe Ladro, who will promote the effort by offering discounts.  Individuals are encouraged to approach their neighborhood coffeehouses (or office, cafeteria, or community organization) to get them involved:  the website offers a flier, including a list of incentives for businesses.  Everything is designed to make it easy for the movement to spread at the grassroots level.

“It’s not as difficult as we make it out to be,” says founder and executive director Karin de Weille.  “We need to show ourselves that we have the power, that we are the adaptable organisms that today’s fast-changing world requires.”  And she believes Seattle is the perfect place to test this point.  Seattle City Council President Richard Conlin concurs, “This initiative is another example of Seattle’s environmental leadership.  Let’s show that we can do this, and our success will be duplicated in other cities.”

The campaign addresses the powerlessness we often feel as individuals.  According to de Weille, “We often feel overwhelmed and so we retreat into denial and a sense of powerlessness.  We find reasons to maintain habits whose value we’ve come to doubt.  Deciding to carry a reusable cup can become a powerful way to align ourselves with what we know to be true and necessary.  And when we make this single move together, we feel that much more empowered as a community to steer our way into the future.  Really, the goals of the campaign are quite broad.  A campaign targeting disposable cups is one way in.  And an especially good way here in Seattle, where we drink a lot of coffee!”

Ford and Green Festival Give Organizations a Chance to Make a Difference with Community Green Grants

  • Ford and the Green Festival are teaming up to invite organizations and communities to propose innovative and impactful ideas that would improve the environment in their local communities with a $5,000 Community Green Grant
  • The Green Festival and Community Green Grant will travel to Chicago, Seattle, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco this year. Entries for the grant to be awarded at the Chicago Green Festival are due by May 7
  • As a corporate innovator partner of all five 2011 Green Festivals being held across the U.S., Ford will have a presence at each event that includes a display at the Ford Pavilion, test drives of hybrids and electrified vehicles, and a Ford executive speaker on the company’s sustainability and green vehicle strategy

Dearborn, Mich., May 3, 2011 – Ford and the Green Festival have teamed up to find and fund the most innovative projects to improve the environment in five U.S. cities. The Community Green Grant program challenges organizations and individuals to propose impactful ideas that would improve the environment in their local communities prior to the start of a local Green Festival. Attendees at the Green Festival in each city will vote to select the project proposal that will receive the $5,000 Community Green Grant.

“Being an environmentally responsible company is a key part of the Ford corporate identity,” said John Viera, Ford director of Sustainability & Vehicle Environmental Matters. “By working with the Green Festival, we are able to extend this sustainable thinking beyond Ford and do something tangible and permanent to improve the local community following each event.”

Before each event opening, a panel from Green Festival and Ford will select a group of Community Green Grant finalists from among the proposals submitted. During the Green Festival, the finalists’ project proposals will be presented in the Ford Pavilion, with the winner of the Community Green Grant chosen by a vote of festival attendees.

“We’re so pleased to be partnering with Ford to bring the Community Green Grant program to all of the Green Festival cities,” said Greg Roberts, Green Festival producer. “I am confident we will receive some very creative project proposals from the many people and organizations who participate in the events.”

Attendees will vote on the grant finalists throughout the two-day event. The votes will be tallied on-site and the winning project proposal will be announced on the final afternoon of the Green Festival.

“The Green Festival is a great fit for Ford because it’s a way to connect with the most passionate and environmentally concerned consumers,” said Viera. “We can share our sustainability strategy and have a two-way dialogue about how we can work together to improve the environment.”

As a corporate innovator partner, Ford will have a presence at each of the Green Festivals that includes a display at the Ford Pavilion, test drives of hybrids and electrified vehicles, and a presentation by a Ford executive speaker who will discuss the company’s sustainability and green vehicle strategy.

Sustainable ideas
The first $5,000 Community Green Grant will be awarded during the Chicago Green Festival, May 14-15. Later in 2011, the Green Festival and Community Green Grant will travel to Seattle, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Environmentalist Leaders Meet to Discuss Strategies for Fight Against Climate Change

At the Venezuelan Embassy’s Bolivarian Hall

Washington DC – April 27, 2011 Environmental leaders met on Tuesday, April 26, at the Venezuelan embassy’s Bolivarian Hall to share their experiences and celebrate their joint work in protecting the environment, promoting social justice and food security, combating climate change, and fighting for a cleaner earth.

The event, organized by the Rural Coalition, ChecktheWeather.TV, Advocates for Environmental Human Rights, Live Green and the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, sought to pave the way for activists of the nation’s capital to make connections to further work at the local, national and global level aimed at saving the earth. Additionally, the leaders sketched out future actions in the fight against climate change. The proposals, which will be collected and sent to all the attendees by the Venezuelan embassy, include environmental justice initiatives that will be implemented over the remaining year and through 2012.

“I think this event was productive. I met people that I didn’t know before. I had been able to make connections and build solidarity on the work that I’m doing and that others are doing. We were able to find commonalities,” said Michele Roberts, Campaign & Policy Coordinator of Advocates for Environmental Human Rights.

Most of the activists who attended this meeting participated in the World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth, held in April 2010 in Cochabamba, Bolivia, as well as in the UN Framework Conventions on Climate Change, held in Copenhagen in 2009 and Cancun in 2010.

According to Roberts, this event, which was co-hosted by the Venezuelan embassy, also allowed environmental activists to join efforts and strategies for a common agenda in the wave of the coming UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Durban, South Africa in late 2011.

“If we are all able to work together, we should be able to go to Durban with folks representing the United States, Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Various countries that we’re representing in this space tonight have people right here working in the United States,” added Roberts.

Besides members of the environmental community in Washington, D.C., the event was also attended by leaders of social movements and human rights activists. “We realized that our struggle is bigger than an environmental issue. It is about an issue of saving humanity,” highlighted Roberts.

The deputy chiefs of mission of the embassies of Bolivia and Venezuela, Freddy Bersatti and Angelo Rivero-Santos, also attended the event.

A brief presentation on the experience of Venezuela’s “Mission Tree” was given by Clara Saraí Rodríguez, the Venezuelan embassy’s environmental attaché. Angela Adrar, from the Rural Coalition; Kari Fulton, from ChecktheWeather.TV, Lilian Molina, from the Energy Action Coalition, and Roberts also presented their experiences and work in the environmental struggle, and thanked the embassies of Bolivia and Venezuela for supporting environmental initiatives.

The photo exhibition “Faces of the Harvest,” which documents the participation of the Venezuelan people in activities centered on reforestation and the protection of Venezuelan forests, was also enjoyed by the people who attended the event.

From 2006 to 2010, Mission Tree has created 5,199 conservation committees, groups made up of people from local communities who organize to promote reforestation and to protect the environment. Those conservation committees include the participation of 50,000 people throughout Venezuela. Thirty-four thousand hectares, over 84,000 acres, have been reforested throughout the country, and about 42 million plants have been planted in 3,198 community, school and governmental nurseries.

The event concluded with a concert of musicians Maimouna Yousse, Patricio Zamorano and Vicky Leiva.

Whole Foods or Whole Hypocrisy?

“In an interview at the Green Festival in San Francisco on April 9, Alexis Baden-Mayer, OCA Campaign Director, explained the strategy behind the Millions Against Monsanto Truth-in-Labeling Campaign.

“Over 90% of Americans want GE-tainted foods labeled. Why? So that we can avoid buying these foods.  This is a major reason why millions of us are buying certified organic products, which preclude the use of GE ingredients, as well as toxic chemicals and animal drugs. Since the politicians in Washington apparently prefer to listen to Monsanto rather than their constituents, we need to put our efforts where we currently have the most power, in our local communities, especially at the retail grocery store level, where 50 million of us are regularly buying certified organic and so-called ‘natural’ foods.

“What most green consumers don’t understand yet, is that most of the so-called “natural” processed foods and animal products (which make up 2/3 of the sales of Whole Foods Market) that we are still buying are GMO-contaminated. Either they contain GMO ingredients like soy, corn, canola, cottonseed oil or sugar beet sweetener, or else the animals have been force-fed fed a steady diet of GMO grains and drugs.”

A Day of Service on the Los Angeles River

El Río de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula

Saturday, April 30, 2011

LOS ANGELES - The “LA River Day of Service,” taking place Saturday April 30, 2011, will bring community awareness to the Los Angeles River and watershed issues by mobilizing volunteers city-wide through service and civic engagement.  The “LA River Day of Service” is part of Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa’s “We Serve LA” volunteer and service campaign and will bring together Angelenos throughout the City in an effort to learn about how we are all connected to the LA River (and its tributaries) and find ways to continue revitalizing this urban treasure.

The “LA River Day of Service” will consist of an array of service projects, beautification, community education, and fun-filled activities along the river (from the Valley to the Eastside).  The day will engage countless community groups and individuals volunteering together to improve neighborhoods and bankside sites along the 51-mile L.A. River. Mayor Villaraigosa and other community leaders/celebrities/sponsors will travel on a trolley and visit targeted service projects along the river.  Service activities take place in the morning, culminating with a volunteer celebration featuring a free concert by GRAMMY® Award-winning Ozomatli at Rio de Los Angeles State Park in the afternoon.

The “LA River Day of Service” is organized in conjunction with the Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) and will include the participation of other community based organizations, schools, and neighborhood councils.  These groups include the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, Keep America Beautiful, LA River Revitalization Corp., Los Angeles River Project, San Fernando Valley Audobon Society, Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority, Heal the Bay, Urban Semillas, Pacoima Beautiful, & Girls Today Women Tomorrow, Pacific Asian Volunteer Association.  We have over 50 community service projects taking place and expect between 5,000 – 8,000 volunteers to participate throughout the day.

The event will culminate at El Rio de Los Angeles Park where volunteers will be thanked by the Mayor and others for their service, have lunch and be treated to a free concert by LA’s own “Ozomatli.”  Community and sponsor booths will be set to provide relevant information to those in attendance.  Daphne Zuniga, actress and part of the cast of the CW’s “One Tree Hill,” will serve as MC for the culmination ceremony.

As an added bonus to celebrate the Los Angeles River, Ozomatli, the City’s Department of Cultural Affairs and the Office of the Mayor will organize “Songs of the LA River,” where local students will have an opportunity to submit songs about the river.  Selected student songs will be performed live by Ozomatli during their concert on the river.   KCET will also be on hand to document the many stories from people who have experienced the LA River through their public media programs Departures and StoryShare.

For more information on the “LA River Day of Service” please contact Rafael Gonzalez (rafael.gonzalez@lacity.org).

How Being Bold Can Create a Just Food System in Africa

This guest post was written by Zakiya Harris, San Francisco Green Festival’s Community Catalyst and the Founder of Earthseed Consulting.

“As we embrace the cosmic shift transpiring on the planet, we bear witness to walls of separation fading into the realization of one global community.

The role of Africa is integral to this process.

Not only because it represents the birthplace of civilization but because the land and its people have served as “global canaries” in the coal mine of our collective conscience. Africa, is a symbol of how inconceivable beauty and unimaginable horrors can shape the landscape of the human spirit and affect the planet. Therefore, you cannot have a conversation about the transition toward a just food system without first exploring the implications of a just Africa. Before a seed is planted one must first ensure that the soil is healthy and in many ways Africa epitomizes the soil essential for the growth of humanity.”
