Online Retailers Promote Cyber Monday

“Cyber Monday. Green Tuesday. Black Friday. Magenta Saturday.

Chances are you won’t find any of these holidays on your calendar. Yet retailers are coming up with names for just about every day of the week during the holiday shopping season.

“…………Nonprofit Green America is launching “Green Tuesday” this week to encourage people to buy gifts with the environment and local communities in mind. The group is planning to push the event every Tuesday through December.”

Green America, which says it aims to support society and the environment through economic programs, plans to showcase deals on its website, including jewelry made from recycled nuclear bomb equipment from online retailer Fromwartopeace.com and a self-watering system for plants by Dri Water.

“Mass culture encourages people to run out of their house, now at midnight, and go shopping,” says Todd Larsen, director of corporate responsibility for Green America, which vetted the businesses it’s highlighting on its website to ensure they meet certain environmental and ethical standards. “Why not wait another day or more and buy something that helps others?”‘

The San Francisco 10th Annual Green Festival a huge success

“It would be impossible to attend this festival and not leave with the feeling that action needs to be taken.  Whether your battle is to recycle and compost your waste, combat the 1%, or pledge to help the people of Africa, the Green Festival left visitors feeling moved.  Once you’ve been, you cannot stop going back and loyal festival goers who have attended for the last 10 years say the festival ‘just getting bigger and better’!

Who knows what the keynote speakers will be talking about in another 10 years, but we do know that the Green Festival is going to hit the east coast next. New York City will play host to the next set of inspiring keynote speakers on the 21-22nd April 2012 at Javits North.”

CSR Means True Partnerships

“This month I sat down withJohn Perkins, the author of the New York Times bestseller, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, and many other titles, and former chief economist at a major international consulting firm.

Scott: Tell me about your work with business students around the US, particularly as it relates to Corporate Social Responsibility.

John: We talk about what’s really important for any business leader to understand today. We have moved into a new era where people understand we’ve created a failed system.  When less than 5 percent of the world’s population live in the United States and consume more than 25 percent of the world’s resources, while roughly half the world is either starving or on the verge of starvation — the only way you can define that system is as a failure.”

Tech for Toxics: Clorox, EPA Use Mobile Apps to Share Green Data

“Smartphones are rapidly becoming ubiquitous, and there are ever-increasing ways for individuals to use them to make smarter shopping choices. But how do companies and governments decide the best ways to present their data to the public? Two unrelated news items in the last week highlight two different ways to help people on the move make greener decisions.

First, Clorox last week announced that it had developed at mobile application and website devoted to making it easier to see the chemical makeup of its products — and what those chemicals do.”

Why CSR Reports Are a Useful Tool for Greening Your Business

“Let’s be honest. Creating an environmentally sustainable business is a challenge. There are several factors that go into the green equation, from water and energy use to ecological impact, but the idea is to start somewhere and, often times, the best way to start is by tracking the sustainability footprint of your own company.

Twelve years ago, Ford Motor Company began releasing its annual sustainability report, designed to both highlight the company’s progress in sustainable practices and also show us where our efforts could be improved. Over the years, we’ve seen significant progress in reducing vehicle emissions, increasing the volume of sustainable and recycled materials used in manufacturing, and putting fuel-efficient vehicles on the road, among other things.”

Taking Aim at Mutant Capitalism

Excerpted from: Taking Aim at Mutant Capitalism via Nic Halverson – Mindful Metropolis

John Perkins, author of the New York Times bestseller, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, talks about his most recent book and how to create a more equitable and ethical economy

Are you starting to see more companies—one’s that honor true cost accounting—emerge through the Green Festivals?
It really gives me great hope when I see things like the Green Festival, where there’s a very strong vetting of the products that are sold there and we’re looking at companies that really are producing clothes, food, shoes and appliances in a much more socially and environmentally responsible way. And I have to say that I don’t think any of these companies are perfect at this point, but we’re moving in that direction. At places like the Green Festival, you have this huge market place where so many things are for sale that are all being [produced] in the most advanced socially and environmentally responsible ways that we know today. That gives me great hope and its always pushing the envelope. So every year these companies ought to get better at what they do and over time, perhaps, we’ll be approaching perfection and maybe someday we might even reach it. But in the meantime, what we all ought to do is support companies that have made a commitment to being socially and environmentally responsible.

It sounds like communities that foster social and environmental stewardship really motivate you to speak at and participate in the Green Festivals.
Absolutely. I’ve been speaking at the Green Festivals for many years now and I’m speaking at all of them this next year. The last couple of years Amy Goodman and I have been the only ones who have spoken at all of them. People sometimes ask me, ‘how can you afford to do that [every year] as so things don’t get tedious at the Green Festivals?’ And my response is, ‘How can I afford not to? I have a three-and-a-half-year-old grandson and I want to make a better world for him and all his brothers and sisters on the planet.’ So, how can I afford not to do it? We can teach a lot of people and support a very, very good cause. And the organizations behind the Green Festival are all very committed and dedicated to creating a more environmentally and socially responsible planet.

The Global Message of Egypt

“Now that we’ve witnessed the historic overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, and seen how the people of Egypt have spoken loud and clear in favor of democracy, let us stand together in support of Egypt, ensuring this ancient land will not fall to corporatocracy. And, let’s also be inspired to end the terrible reign of corporatocracy around the world, including in the United States.”

Video Interview: Numi Tea CEO Ahmed Rahim

“The food industry is one that has embarked upon revolutionary changes in the areas of wellness and sustainability. There are many paths to entry for smaller companies and innovative entrepreneurs. For example, a USDA report entitled Oversight of the National Organic Program estimates that organic product sales reached approximately $25b dollars annually in 2008 with projected 14-21% annual revenue growth. And smaller, innovative companies have a real opportunity as the food industry’s major players confront issues of credibility as their traditional customer base, along with government regulators, raise such telling questions as why there are no ribs in the McDonald’s McRib or no real maple in their Fruit and Maple Oatmeal. Rapid and profitable business success is an opportunity in the food industry that is being realized by credible companies selling authentic products.”
