Event: Gadgets & Gizmos Get You Drinks, Wednesday February 29, 2012 at Brother Jimmy's in Union Square, NYC

Gadgets & Gizmos Get You Drinks

E-Cycling Happy Hour at Brother Jimmy’s

What: Don’t throwaway your throwback electronics! New York based electronics recycling program, Guzu, is encouraging you to go green with your gadgets by giving you an opportunity to let your old Blackberry, T-9 calculator or laptop buy you a drink! Bring in any old working or non-working electronic to recycle as your ticket in for an exclusive happy hour at Brother Jimmy’s in Union Square on Wednesday, February 29th. Dig through your old junk drawer and join us as we toast to the old junk in your trunk and properly recycle abandoned electronics.

The guest who recycles the oldest, throwback electronic (i.e. Zack Morris cell phone, or beeper) will be awarded Brother Jimmy’s signature fishbowl, Swamp Water. Happy hour specials include:

  • $3.00: PBR, Bud/Bud Light Drafts, Nattys, Well Drinks, Frozen Margaritas
  • $5.00: Heinekens, Frickles appetizer

Who: Guzu, launched by three New York eco-preneurs, pays consumers cash for their old electronics and then recycles them to the highest extent possible; helping to keep electronics out of landfills. On top of putting green in consumers’ wallets, Guzu also plants a tree for every transaction completed through their partner American Forests, a nonprofit organization that seeks to protect the natural capital of trees and forests.

Why Guzu: Often times retired or broken electronics are tossed into landfills as they are not disposed of or recycled properly, adding to the millions of tons of “e-waste” produced every year. There are presently over 3 billion consumer electronics in homes all across America and over 500 million consumer electronics sold annually. Currently, only 25% of e-waste is properly recycled, with the vast majority ending up in landfills or consumers’ “junk drawers.”

When: Wednesday February 29, 2012; 5:00pm – 8:00pm

Where: Brother Jimmy’s; Union Square; 116 East 16th Street (between Park Ave South & Irving Place) New York, NY 10003; www.brotherjimmys.com; (212) 673-6465; Closets subways top to location is Union Sq (N,Q,R,L,4,5,6)

Tickets: Bring any old working or non-working gadget (cell phone, calculator, gaming unit, etc) and drop it into the Guzu e-cycling bin in exchange for your happy hour ticket.

About Guzu, Inc. At Guzu, “eco-friendly” comes in many shades of green – green for your wallet, green for industry, and green for the environment. Our unique value proposition allows consumers to sell their used electronics for cash, while supplying the Consumer Electronics Industry with recycled parts, which help to sustain the secondary market.  Through our partnership with American Forests, we also reduce the industry’s carbon footprint by planting one tree for every order completed.  For complete instructions on how to recycle, please visit www.guzu.com

San Francisco Green Festival 10-year celebration 2011

‘“The coconut spread is to die for,” raved the elderly lady next to me as we admired the spread of non-dairy butters. Her crimson felt hat suited for a royal wedding slightly obstructed my view. I took her advice and slathered a knife full of the coconut spread on a raisin bagel. Next to butter in a contest, I may have noticed a difference, but this Earth Balance coconut spread was velvety and rich and absolutely to die for. “Just don’t look at the calorie count,” she added, watching me savor the bite. “Sorry to interrupt your bliss.”

The San Francisco Greenfest is an event I would attend regardless of its newsworthiness. This event kicks so much butt I find it hard to decide where to go first. And it doesn’t just rock the green world, it rocks the social justice, political fairness, media integrity, earth-friendly food, international music and global awareness worlds too. For those who believe being “green” is just a tree hugger thing, this is an event that recognizes how related all of the above issues really are.”

San Francisco leaders are supporting the 10th anniversary.  According to Mayor Edwin M. Electric Car Drivers to Stage Country’s Largest Plug-in Parade on First National Plug In Day

20 Cities Coast-to-Coast Stage Activities for Largest Grassroots EV Event in History

WHAT: Some 200 EV drivers will take to the streets for the country’s largest-ever plug-in parade to champion the benefits of EVs. Parade in Santa Monica, CA is the flagship event of the first National Plug In Day, taking place in more than 20 cities across the country where EV owners and interested citizens will participate in other parades, “tailpipe-free” tailgate parties, lectures, a ceremonial plugging-in and other grassroots events. For a complete list of national Plug In Day cities and event details, visit: http://www.pluginamerica.org/pluginday

New and legacy plug-in vehicles by GM, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota, SMART, Ford, Tesla, Coda and others will be driven in the flagship parade through downtown Santa Monica. Director Chris Paine, whose film, “Revenge of the Electric Car,” will hit theatres across the country on October 21st, is among confirmed speakers at the press conference preceding the parade. QUOTE: “Only a few years ago, major automakers were literally crushing electric cars. Today, virtually every auto company in the world is selling or developing a plug-in car, and consumers are snapping up each and every one, stimulating our economy while helping the environment. You’ll see hundreds of these vehicles in National Plug In Day activities. And remember: EVs are powered by domestic electricity, so every cent we spend to run them stays in America,” says Plug In America co-founder and Sierra Club member Paul Scott.

WHEN: Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011: 9:30 a.m. press conference; 10 a.m. parade

WHERE:
·       Press Conference: Santa Monica City Hall, 1685 Main St., Santa Monica, CA 90401.
·       Parade: Starting from Main Street and Pico Boulevard, two blocks from Santa Monica City Hall press conference.
