L.A. calls for end to 'corporate personhood'

“At a packed City Council meeting that included remarks from a man in a top hat with fake money tucked in the pocket of his suit, Los Angeles lawmakers Tuesday called for more regulations on how much corporations can spend on political campaigns.

The vote in support of state and federal legislation that would end so-called “corporate personhood” is largely symbolic. But anti-corporate activist Mary Beth Fielder, who spoke in favor of the resolution, called it “a symbol that’s going to be heard around the world.”’

Sow seeds, not greed: Farmers gather on Wall Street

“It’s been a long time since farmers congregated in downtown Manhattan — around 350 years, to be exact. The folks who populate Wall Street and rural America don’t cross paths much these days. It’s easy to forget that Wall Street used to be rural America; in 1644, the area contained so many cows that the Dutch colonists had to erect a cattle guard to keep them from straying. Livestock farmers literally established the boundaries of Wall Street.

Today, the bronze bull — that icon of the OWS movement — is the lone farm animal you’ll find in the financial district. And the barricades are back, but only to keep Zuccotti Park’s mic checkers in check. That surprisingly fertile concrete plaza has yielded a bumper crop of grassroots activists, to the discomfort of (most of) the 1% and the shills who bill them. But the voices of farmers — a.k.a. the 1% that grows the food that 100% of us eat — have been largely missing from this movement to reclaim our democracy, despite the fact that food has become a commodity that enriches a few at the expense of the many.

That all changed this past Sunday, though, when a group of farmers from around the country marched to Zuccotti Park accompanied by their allies: food justice activists, community gardeners, and other advocates for a more equitable, ecologically sound, re-localized food system.

The march, organized by Occupy Wall Street’s food justice committee and Food Democracy Now, began with a rally at La Plaza Cultural Community Garden in the East Village, where hundreds of folks gathered to hear fiddlers and drummers give the event a festive kickoff, followed by a panel of urban and rural farmers.”

LA’s Solar Power, Green Jobs Potential Largely Untapped

“World Bank financing has help put solar power systems on more than 300,000 homes and small businesses in Bangladesh. Working with its local partners, the World Bank’s International Development Association IDA’s Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Project (RERED), is aiming to boost that to more than 1 million with an additional $172 million credit facility.

Imagine what could be done here in the US if local, state and the federal government really got behind and supported solar and renewable energy. A lot of potential lies untapped, in many cases solely due to a lack of political will and determination.

An academic study conducted by researchers from UCLA and USC found that there’s a wealth of untapped human resources in LA just waiting to be employed in the solar energy industry. City and civic leaders have thus far failed to enact policies that would take advantage of it, however.”

The First Global Revolution Has Begun

“If you rely on the corporate media for your news, you may not be aware that this is the most significant revolutionary period in human history. Previous revolutions were national in scope: the revolutionaries sought control of a capital city in order to change the politics and economics of that nation. Now we are in the early stages of the first-ever global revolution. It is not about seizing power in capital cities; it is a values revolution that is demanding a transition from the current system where money values rule over the life cycle, to a new system where life values will rule over the money cycle.”

Ford Motor Company and Green Festival to Award Community Green Grant in Los Angeles, San Francisco

“Do you live in or near Los Angeles or San Francisco? Do you have a great sustainable idea? Do you need a grant to possibly make it happen? Can you articulate that idea in 500 or less words? Well, theFord Motor Company and Green Festival have teamed up to award a grant to a sustainable idea. That idea could very well be yours.

The partnership will award a $5,000 Community Green Grant during the up and coming  Los Angeles and San Francisco Green Festivals. That’s a $5,000 Grant for an idea at each of the cities Green Festivals.

The idea can be almost anything, from almost anybody. Recipients could be a non-profit or an individual. The idea can be really big, or really small. The idea just has to be “original, innovative and capable of being implemented in your local community.”’
