“In recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8, protesters wearing superhero costumes rallied outside a Beverly Hills Bank of America branch Thursday in support of women and families who have lost their homes due to bank foreclosures.

“It’s International Women’s Day. This is the day women get to come together and say what doesn’t work in our society,” said protester Laurie Kaufman, who dressed up as Superwoman Occupy. “Bank of America is one of those things. They’re too big to fail but they’re too big to exist. The president couldn’t stop them and neither could Congress. So we’re calling on all superheroes to come out, save the day and stand up for the little person.”

The event was coordinated by CODEPINK, a women-initiated grassroots social justice movement. The rally took place at the Bank of America branch at 9454 Wilshire Blvd. Similar protests were held at Bank of America branches in New York City. Also taking part in the rallies were the groups Women Occupy, Rainforest Action Network, Public Citizen and Green Festival.”

We know the facts, but seeing them together is staggering: unemployment is firmly mired in the double digits and efforts to bring it down isn’t creating jobs; students leaving college, if they can even afford to go, have debts that would have seemed unimaginable just 15 years ago and when they don’t see any openings in their field they head straight for a McJob or the unemployment line; the climate crisis remains unaddressed by global leaders and the US Congress and President Obama contemplates whether or not to green-light the Keystone XL pipeline; we are heading into the 10th year of war spending (at $3 billion a week!); corporations fought hard to win Citizens United and the ‘right’ to spend unlimited funds to get candidates into office; wealthy men (sometimes brothers) encourage corrupt Governors to end worker protections; and banks and Wall Street continue getting huge bonuses and bail-outs. We know something isn’t working. Enough is enough.

We are 99% of the population and 1% is controlling the show! Enough is enough.

For years, solidarity was presumed to be a one-way street – North Americans supporting liberation struggles around the world – but this year support to those standing up is global and circular. In Cairo, young people, armed with the courage of their convictions, overthrew the Egyptian government and launched the Arab Spring in Tahrir Square, Egypt.  The power of their non-violent resistance, their ability to stay when it seemed impossible, is the inspiration we must take forward to say enough is enough.

“If I had ever doubted the power of words, Judge Benson made their importance all too clear at my sentencing last month. When he sentenced me to two years in prison plus three years probation, he admitted my offense “wasn’t too bad.” The problem, Judge Benson insisted, was my “continuing trail of statements” and my lack of regret. Apparently, all he really wanted was an apology, and for that, two years in prison could have been avoided. In fact, Judge Benson said that had it not been for the political statements I made in public, I would have avoided prosecution entirely. As is generally the case with civil disobedience, it was extremely important to the government that I come before the majesty of the court with my head bowed and express regret. So important, in fact, that an apology with proper genuflection is currently fair trade for a couple years in prison. Perhaps that’s why most activist cases end in a plea bargain.”

“More than 100 activists have been arrested so far for protesting against the proposed Keystone XL pipeline in front of the White House — and more are getting locked up every day. At least 2,100 people have signed up to participate in the two-week sit-in, which kicked off on Saturday and will continue every day through Sept. 3. Not all of the protestors are intending to get arrested, but expect hundreds more to serve some time in the clink.”

“Environmentalists have launched a global campaign against Mattel Inc., the world’s largest toy company, as part of a decade-long effort to force multinational corporations to purge their operations of any links to rain forest destruction.

On Tuesday, Greenpeace activists in turquoise vests rappelled down the face of the company’s 15-story headquarters in El Segundo and hung a giant banner depicting a frowning Ken doll with the message: “Barbie: it’s over. I don’t date girls that are into deforestation.”‘

National Environmental Writers Rally Around Wendell Berry in Kentucky Governor’s Office Sit-In

FRANKFORT, KY – February 14, 2011, The nation’s most acclaimed environment writers are rallying around Wendell Berry, whom they called “the dean of their profession,” in support of his four-day long sit-in protesting mountaintop removal mining that continues in the office of Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear.

In strong statements of support, writer and 350.org founder Bill McKibben, along with bestselling authors Michael Pollan and Terry Tempest Williams, expressed their solidarity with the group of fourteen protesters that also includes a retired coal miner, a nurse practitioner who treats miners, community organizers, a graduate student, and others.

“People across America today…are electrified by what’s going on in Frankfort,” McKibben said. “It’s about time that people said: ‘No more business as usual, if that means leveling the mountains of southern Appalachia.’ And it comes as no surprise that Wendell Berry is in the forefront, as he has been for an entire generation.”

Michael Pollan, author of the bestselling The Omnivore’s Dilemma, agreed: “All of us who care about the future of the planet stand in solidarity with Wendell Berry and his compatriots in Frankfort, Kentucky, where they are conducting a ‘sleep in’ to protest mountaintop removal.”

“I can think of no more appropriate action to be taking on Valentine’s Day than what Wendell Berry and his fellow Kentuckians are doing: taking a stand from one’s heart,” Terry Tempest Williams (The Open Space of Democracy) said. “Mountaintop removal is an act of aggression. Civil disobedience is an act of love. We are right there with them in solidarity and support.”

The sit-in, which the protesters dubbed Kentucky Rising, has attracted international attention, with messages of support coming in from Argentina and Germany. In a statement issued last night, they called on Gov. Beshear, who is running for reelection this year, to join with them in opposing mountaintop removal.

“It’s disappointing that Gov. Beshear is choosing to play election-year politics with the lives and livelihoods of eastern Kentuckians. We continue to call on him to engage in a sincere, public dialogue about ending mountaintop removal and beginning a program of economic renewal for our miners and mountain communities.”
