The Permaculture Movement Grows From Underground

“As a way to save the world, digging a ditch next to a hillock of sheep dung would seem to be a modest start. Granted, the ditch was not just a ditch. It was meant to be a “swale,” an earthwork for slowing the flow of water down a slope on a hobby farm in western Wisconsin.

And the trenchers, far from being day laborers, had paid $1,300 to $1,500 for the privilege of working their spades on a cement-skied Tuesday morning in late June.

Fourteen of us had assembled to learn permaculture, a simple system for designing sustainable human settlements, restoring soil, planting year-round food landscapes, conserving water, redirecting the waste stream, forming more companionable communities and, if everything went according to plan, turning the earth’s looming resource crisis into a new age of happiness.”

Green Festival 2011-An Eco-Extravaganza

“It was great to see Chicago go green post St. Patrick’s Day, with the annual Green Festival.

Du-Jay again enjoyed people power bike ride with Working Bikes. It’s fun to see the pedaling create enough energy to make a little bike go around the world, spout water from a mermaid rain barrel or play a record!   We also saw our old favorites, Coco Loco, who will also be at Summer Camp Music Festival again.   I wear 2 pairs of their earrings pretty much 24/7 and Sagezilla also has a spiral pair she often wears when not actively doing gymnastics.    We also saw the booth that makes old banners into super cool wallets and bags, like my favorite one that resembles the Chicago flag….and a certain blog header.”

How to Recycle in a City Without a Program

“For many eco-conscious Chicago residents, the city’s current recycling program looks something like this: Sort recycling. Load car with recycling. Drive to recycling drop off.

That’s assuming, of course, you have a car, the drop-off bins aren’t already full to overflowing, and you’re willing to put in the time.

Indeed, in the eyes of most Chicagoans, local recycling is a joke made especially cruel by Mayor Daley’s campaign to cultivate the city’s environmentally progressive image.”
