Why CSR Reports Are a Useful Tool for Greening Your Business

“Let’s be honest. Creating an environmentally sustainable business is a challenge. There are several factors that go into the green equation, from water and energy use to ecological impact, but the idea is to start somewhere and, often times, the best way to start is by tracking the sustainability footprint of your own company.

Twelve years ago, Ford Motor Company began releasing its annual sustainability report, designed to both highlight the company’s progress in sustainable practices and also show us where our efforts could be improved. Over the years, we’ve seen significant progress in reducing vehicle emissions, increasing the volume of sustainable and recycled materials used in manufacturing, and putting fuel-efficient vehicles on the road, among other things.”

Green Festival Seattle Takeaways

“This past weekend I attended Seattle’s 10th Annual Green Festival where hundreds of vendors and exhibitors enthusiastically shared their green stories. One vendor that stood out for me was Eco Tapi, developers of compostable and biodegradable paper and plastic products made out of tapioca! Not only was the product interesting, but they also had a beautiful way of merchandising such utilitarian wares. Their parent company, Green Tokyo, makes a variety of interesting eco-products.”

Hip Hop Caucus Comes To Seattle Green Festival

“The Rev. Lennox Yearwood is speaking on the Green Festival Main Stage at 2 pm on Saturday: “Green Mojo: How the Green Movement Can Get It Back, and Keep It In the Future”.

His Background -Rev. Lennox Yearwood: A pacemaker within the green movement, Rev Yearwood has successfully bridged the gap between communities of color and environmental justice for more than three years. In 2009, Yearwood led the Hip Hop Caucus to create the Green the Block campaign in partnership with Green for All. In result, the Hip Hop Caucus is the first organization to launch a national grassroots campaign from the White House. In 2010 Yearwood was named one of the 100 most powerful African Americans by Ebony Magazine, and one of the 10 Game Changers in the Green movement by the Huffington Post. Now, in 2011 the Hip Hop Caucus is fighting poverty and pollution at the same time with the One Planet. One Voice. campaign. Money matters when it comes to environmental justice. One Planet. Once Voice. addresses the disproportionate affects of pollution on impoverished communities. Yearwood’s unique influence promoted Discovery Communications to produce a full-length documentary covering his life and leadership.

Taking Aim at Mutant Capitalism

Excerpted from: Taking Aim at Mutant Capitalism via Nic Halverson – Mindful Metropolis

John Perkins, author of the New York Times bestseller, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, talks about his most recent book and how to create a more equitable and ethical economy

Are you starting to see more companies—one’s that honor true cost accounting—emerge through the Green Festivals?
It really gives me great hope when I see things like the Green Festival, where there’s a very strong vetting of the products that are sold there and we’re looking at companies that really are producing clothes, food, shoes and appliances in a much more socially and environmentally responsible way. And I have to say that I don’t think any of these companies are perfect at this point, but we’re moving in that direction. At places like the Green Festival, you have this huge market place where so many things are for sale that are all being [produced] in the most advanced socially and environmentally responsible ways that we know today. That gives me great hope and its always pushing the envelope. So every year these companies ought to get better at what they do and over time, perhaps, we’ll be approaching perfection and maybe someday we might even reach it. But in the meantime, what we all ought to do is support companies that have made a commitment to being socially and environmentally responsible.

It sounds like communities that foster social and environmental stewardship really motivate you to speak at and participate in the Green Festivals.
Absolutely. I’ve been speaking at the Green Festivals for many years now and I’m speaking at all of them this next year. The last couple of years Amy Goodman and I have been the only ones who have spoken at all of them. People sometimes ask me, ‘how can you afford to do that [every year] as so things don’t get tedious at the Green Festivals?’ And my response is, ‘How can I afford not to? I have a three-and-a-half-year-old grandson and I want to make a better world for him and all his brothers and sisters on the planet.’ So, how can I afford not to do it? We can teach a lot of people and support a very, very good cause. And the organizations behind the Green Festival are all very committed and dedicated to creating a more environmentally and socially responsible planet.

Ford and Green Festival Give Organizations a Chance to Make a Difference with Community Green Grants

  • Ford and the Green Festival are teaming up to invite organizations and communities to propose innovative and impactful ideas that would improve the environment in their local communities with a $5,000 Community Green Grant
  • The Green Festival and Community Green Grant will travel to Chicago, Seattle, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco this year. Entries for the grant to be awarded at the Chicago Green Festival are due by May 7
  • As a corporate innovator partner of all five 2011 Green Festivals being held across the U.S., Ford will have a presence at each event that includes a display at the Ford Pavilion, test drives of hybrids and electrified vehicles, and a Ford executive speaker on the company’s sustainability and green vehicle strategy

Dearborn, Mich., May 3, 2011 – Ford and the Green Festival have teamed up to find and fund the most innovative projects to improve the environment in five U.S. cities. The Community Green Grant program challenges organizations and individuals to propose impactful ideas that would improve the environment in their local communities prior to the start of a local Green Festival. Attendees at the Green Festival in each city will vote to select the project proposal that will receive the $5,000 Community Green Grant.

“Being an environmentally responsible company is a key part of the Ford corporate identity,” said John Viera, Ford director of Sustainability & Vehicle Environmental Matters. “By working with the Green Festival, we are able to extend this sustainable thinking beyond Ford and do something tangible and permanent to improve the local community following each event.”

Before each event opening, a panel from Green Festival and Ford will select a group of Community Green Grant finalists from among the proposals submitted. During the Green Festival, the finalists’ project proposals will be presented in the Ford Pavilion, with the winner of the Community Green Grant chosen by a vote of festival attendees.

“We’re so pleased to be partnering with Ford to bring the Community Green Grant program to all of the Green Festival cities,” said Greg Roberts, Green Festival producer. “I am confident we will receive some very creative project proposals from the many people and organizations who participate in the events.”

Attendees will vote on the grant finalists throughout the two-day event. The votes will be tallied on-site and the winning project proposal will be announced on the final afternoon of the Green Festival.

“The Green Festival is a great fit for Ford because it’s a way to connect with the most passionate and environmentally concerned consumers,” said Viera. “We can share our sustainability strategy and have a two-way dialogue about how we can work together to improve the environment.”

As a corporate innovator partner, Ford will have a presence at each of the Green Festivals that includes a display at the Ford Pavilion, test drives of hybrids and electrified vehicles, and a presentation by a Ford executive speaker who will discuss the company’s sustainability and green vehicle strategy.

Sustainable ideas
The first $5,000 Community Green Grant will be awarded during the Chicago Green Festival, May 14-15. Later in 2011, the Green Festival and Community Green Grant will travel to Seattle, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Neo-Network: Mimi's Organic Exchange

“In an online, instantaneous, and ever-evolving world, we have innumerable social networks and a myriad of opportunities to connect with others. But face-to-face communication is waning and quality time is fading away—so are we really creating lasting connections?Mimi’s Organic Exchange (MOE), which is located in Chicago, is another kind of network, a healing network that facilitates “positive sharing” among professionals, small businesses, artisans, non-profits, and others interested in developing sustainable connections through social events. MOE supports socially, environmentally, and spiritually sustainable products and services.

Both MOE and The Convergence Project are groups that are passionate about teaching and encouraging others to be more open-minded, building community, and forming real connections. In Clayton’s words, we want people to “be respectful to each other. We are living on this planet. We are all living together.”

MOE and The Convergence Project will be presenting at the upcoming Green Festival on May 14-15 at McCormick Center”
