Ford to ‘Grow’ Its Own Car Parts?

“What do mushrooms, dandelion root, wheat, soy and corn have in common? They may comprise key components of your car one day.

At the Forward with Ford futuring and trends conference in Dearborn, Mich., sustainable materials guru Deborah Molesky explained to a group of bloggers, journalists and media personalities that the automaker’s goal is to not only manufacture, but grow, its parts in the U.S.

Molesky joked that her group was “not very popular” when they started in 2000 – and oil prices were only $50-$60 per barrel. But the team kept working, and by 2008 when oil prices moved above $100 per barrel, their products like soy-based foam for seats were developed.”

Activist wants ban on paper coffee cups

“Gulp the coffee, skip the cup

Karin de Weille has launched a campaign in the heart of caffeine country to get people to kick the paper habit. “I think Seattle can push the frontier,” she said at Seattle Green Festival, a two-day celebration of ecofriendliness where the effort got its official start on May 21. The thin plastic coating that keeps most cups from turning to mush complicates recycling. Only a handful of cities try, including Seattle. But even if cups are recycled, it still requires enormous amounts of energy and resources to manufacture and ship them, de Weille told theSeattle Times. Seattle City Council President Richard Conlin endorsed the initiative, which urges participants to whip out their own reusable cups for mochas on the go or “for here.” Americans go through 56 billion paper cups every year, according to statistics compiled by International Paper. Starbucks alone gulps up 3 billion.”

Green Festival: Thinking Global, Acting Local

“The Chicago Green Festival, held at McCormick Place last weekend, rounded up more than 300 green exhibitors and 125 speakers for two days of cutting-edge sustainable lifestyle action and information.

We stopped by on Sunday to find out what’s new in the sustainability world. Here’s a look at what caught our eye in terms of cool products of note and environmentally friendly organizations with whom Morton Grove activists can partner.”

Green Festival 2011 Offers Organics, Innovations, and much, much more

The 2011 Green Festival took place this past weekend at the Qwest Field Events Center in Seattle, bringing with it a host of innovations and green products, as well as some truly energizing and eye-opening speakers. If you missed the event, don’t worry – there are more Green Festivals to come later this year, including stops in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, so be sure to check their website for future dates and tickets.

The Seattle festival was as energetic and illuminating as fans of the annual event have come to expect, with attractions ranging from local gardening advice to national environmental campaigns – via the samples at the organic chocolate tables, naturally. The two-day festival also offered a small beer and wine garden for the responsible adults, while the food options included a host of vegetarian delights, including felafel, burritos, and meat-free sausages.

Seattle Green Festival 2011

“The sun disappeared and it was back to another rainy day in Seattle. Which made it a perfect day to enjoy some indoor activity such as the 4th annual Seattle Green Festival! This year the festival moved to a new venue, inside Qwest Field Event Center.

I’ve been volunteering and attending the festival since its first year. I’m so happy to be able to participate again this year. What a great event to be able to meet so many people who care about the environment.”

Plastic Bag Companies Now Suing Entrepreneurs: The ChicoBag Case

“On the PR side, they’ve launched campaigns like Save The Plastic Bag, which are flooding websites and media with sometimes misleading information: namely, that reusable bags may contain germs that could get your family sick if you don’t wash them (duh: every piece of cloth can contain germs if you don’t wash it, including tea towels, garments, cleaning cloths, etc.).

On the legal side, they’ve sued cities that have banned plastic bags like Oakland, CA, Fairfield, CA, and San Jose, CA, arguing that the decisions were taken without proper environmental impact studies and asking for bans to be taken down.

Unsatisfied with these practices, this business group seems to be taking the next step: filing suits against entrepreneurs that are standing up against single-use plastics. Such is the case of a recent lawsuit that three major plastic bag producers have filed against ChicoBag Company, a pioneering company in the reusable bag movement.”

May be a busy month, liberally speaking

May 21-22, Qwest Event Center (800 Occidental Avenue S., Seattle): The Green Festival. Billed as “the nation’s premier sustainability event,” this wide-ranging extravaganza of alternative, well, everything features a long and variegated list of guest speakers, exhibitors, arts, crafts and musicians. And it won’t cost you much green: between $5 and $25, depending on how, when and where you pay. Be there or be Republican.
