Rethinking Green Products by Re-Imagining Your Inputs

“One of the most exciting developments in the auto industry today has to do with the sustainable innovations that make cars run — improved petrol and diesel engines, ethanol and biodiesel, compressed natural gas, electricity, or some combination thereof.

It’s a topic that will only become more pronounced as car engines are built to do more with even less, especially with President Obama’s recent announcement to green the industry as a whole through aggressive fuel efficiency standards.

This is also a concept that can serve as lessons for those outside of the auto industry. In other words, what can companies do to make their operations more sustainable beyond the end product? Well, a good start would be to look at what is going into those outputs. This trend of replacing traditional materials with sustainable alternatives is something that’s emerging across almost all industries, and like car makers, those companies that aren’t participating in it are setting themselves up to fall behind.”

Video Interview: Numi Tea CEO Ahmed Rahim

“The food industry is one that has embarked upon revolutionary changes in the areas of wellness and sustainability. There are many paths to entry for smaller companies and innovative entrepreneurs. For example, a USDA report entitled Oversight of the National Organic Program estimates that organic product sales reached approximately $25b dollars annually in 2008 with projected 14-21% annual revenue growth. And smaller, innovative companies have a real opportunity as the food industry’s major players confront issues of credibility as their traditional customer base, along with government regulators, raise such telling questions as why there are no ribs in the McDonald’s McRib or no real maple in their Fruit and Maple Oatmeal. Rapid and profitable business success is an opportunity in the food industry that is being realized by credible companies selling authentic products.”

Video Interview: Kevin Cleary, President of Clif Bar

“Since 2002, when Clif Bar made the strategic decision to source product ingredients from organic farms, the company has achieved impressive growth even in the face of a lingering recession. Today, the company has national retail distribution in all 50 states for approximately 100 product offerings and has achieved international expansion into Canada and England. This combination of product design focus on organics plus the company’s sales growth means Clif Bar now uses 40 million pounds of organic ingredients a year –representing 70+% of total product ingredients.”
