The Shorty Award in the #Green category goes to @jerryjamesstone! Green Festival to plant a tree for every vote…

Green Festival guerrilla sponsored the 2012 Social Media Shorty Awards in the category of green by vowing to plant a tree for every vote the #green winner received. We nominated Jerry James Stone – and he won! At a ceremony in New York City, the Shorty Awards announced @JerryJamesStone is the winner of Twitter’s 2012 Green Award. Jerry received 419 votes in the green category.

Trees will planted by Trees for the Future as part of an agroforestry program in collaboration with the global communities in which they serve.  Planting trees in agroforestry systems protects the environment and helps to preserve traditional livelihoods and cultures for generations.

*** Update: Jerry announced on Facebook tonight that we’ll be planting more than 419 trees! “I say we double it!,” he said, “I am gonna match it so that 1,000 trees are planted.” ***

2012 has already been a big year for Jerry. He has been chosen by Cline Cellars to be their first Cline Cool Chef. The social media public voting and judging panel are complete; and a vegetarian recipe will be printed on the back label of Cline Cellar’s Cool Climate Pinot Noir. People around the nation voted for Jerry’s Magic Mushroom Risotto. The winning recipe will be printed on the 2011 vintage label due in bottle this autumn.

Jerry recently launched his new vegan/vegetarian cooking channel on YouTube. Subscribe to Jerry’s channel to find out how to make easy recipes for delicious comfort food that is good for you and the planet.

Jerry James Stone is a writer for Discovery Channel, and the producer and main recipe developer for TreeHugger’s Green Wine Guide, which features sustainable wineries and vegetarian wine pairings. Green Festival Nominates Jerry James Stone for #Green Twitter Award

Jerry judging eco-beers with Michael Pollan at the Good Food Awards

Green Festival is proud to nominate Jerry James Stone for the 2012 #green Shorty Award because he consistently shares gourmet vegan and vegetarian recipes, cool green tech, animal and environment news and more with people around the world on Twitter.

He spoke about “Blogging for Good” at Green Festival Los Angeles, and discussed ideas for how to activate social media communities for positive social change.

Jerry says, “One of the very best things I ever did over Twitter was raise money for a friend in need who had no medical insurance. I had never met the guy (@DerekMarkham), he was an aspiring eco-blogger like myself who had injured himself rock climbing. Through my network on Twitter, and the good graces of my followers, we paid for most of his medical expenses.”

Jerry secured an exclusive video interview with Amy Goodman and Kevin Danaher about communicating and connecting through social media for social justice. He also coordinated interviews with Bill McKibben and GreenPeace and John Viera and Sylvia Mendez at Green Festival in Chicago.

He shared his knowledge of sustainable wines while hosting green wine tastings at Green Festival San Francisco’s Organic Wine Garden. Check out his Green Wine Guide, where he pairs delicious conscious recipes with the best offerings in sustainable viticulture.

“I create simple but innovative recipes using seasonal, local options. The recipes are quick, satisfying, and eco-guilt-free, such as my Vegetarian French Onion Soup that is brewed with coffee. Or, as actress Mariel Hemingway pointed out, my yummy Grilled Avocado Guacamole,” Jerry says. (See the tweet here.)

He was on stage in Washington, D.C. to help present winners of the EcoCAR: NeXt Challenge competition, sponsored by General Motors (GM) and the U.S. Department of Energy, challenging university students across North America to re-engineer a GM-donated auto, with goals to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions while retaining the vehicle’s performance.

Last year, Jerry traveled to Germany to interview government and people in the town of Hamburg about winning the Green Capital of Europe. This year, he is headed to Stockholm.

Plus, he is a fun, interesting, funny and kind human being. He loves to cook for people; and recently hosted friends at his home to bake loaves of organic bread for the local food bank.

Let’s green the green category! We would love it if you would place your vote and plant a tree today (or before February 12).

Find Jerry’s articles at TreeHugger, The Atlantic, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and in MAKE magazine. Jerry also has a conscious cookbook coming out this year.

Incandescent Light Bulb Hoarder Confesses the Error of His Ways

“I love this story, published over on the right-wing pollster Rasmussen’s editorial page. In it, a self-professed environmentalist confesses that he has been hoarding incandescent bulbs for months, in anticipation of the “light bulb ban” — before realizing the error, and utter ridiculousness, of his doing so.

See, as author Froma Harrop points out, there is no incandescent light bulb ban. We’ve been guilty of framing it as such here at TreeHugger, much to my chagrin, but the truth is that you’re still going to be able to get the exact same quality of light — even from incandescent bulbs! Those bulbs just have to be a lot more efficient, that’s all!”

Rubbing Elbows with Solutionaries: Green Festival San Francisco

“I’ve just returned from California where I had the opportunity to speak at the University of California at Berkeley (a MOGO talk) and on the main stage at the San Francisco Green Festival (a humane education talk). In my absence the ice melted (finally) from our pond, and the crocuses bloomed. Much can happen in just a few days.

While the pond was thawing and the crocuses were blooming, I was talking to scores of people interested in creating a better world. There were so many ideas from so many solutionaries, and I’ve come home with a stack of cards from people I want to work with and learn from. I even got to interview a few of them for Treehugger (and you can watch some of these interviews on Treehugger.com starting here). In the next several blog posts I’m going to talk about these different people and groups and share their ideas, so that together we can expand our reach and efforts.”

TED Talk: Zoe Weil on Shaping The World Through Our Classroom

“Zoe Weil is the president of Institute for Humane Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a humane world through teaching principles of living a more meaningful life. In other words, we can create a sustainable, thriving world if we learn to better use our skills of integrity, compassion, healthful lifestyles and so on. While it sounds a little esoteric, or worse, all-out crunchy, what the IHE teaches makes a lot of sense. In a recent TEDx event, Zoe Weil explains exactly how such a stance on education can lead us to a healthier planet.”
