Toni Burnham became an urban beekeeper on April 9, 2005, when two packages containing 10,000 bees each were placed in her hands, and then on the roof of her townhouse. Since then, her apiary has expanded to 7 hives of her own in three locations around the city, as well as public beehives within 6 cityrun parks and community gardens. Toni helped White House carpenter Charlie Brandts make his proposal for a beehive in the vegetable garden there, and has been honored to lend a hand on the South Lawn a couple of times. She is also vice president of the Maryland State Beekeepers Association, and mentor to about a dozen beekeepers in and around the city.
