Shahid Buttar is a Muslim-American constitutional lawyer with expertise in the separation of powers and civil rights. After graduating from Stanford Law School in 2003, he litigated impact cases advancing campaign finance reform and marriage equality for same-sex couples in Washington DC, starting in 2004. Buttar later joined the American Constitution Society as Associate Director, and then practiced at Muslim Advocates in San Francisco for two years before returning to DC to lead the Bill of Rights Defense Committee. His presentations in 2011 included the U.S. House of Representatives in January; Stanford, Santa Clara, and UCLA law schools in February; the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law School in March; and the University of Chicago, Depaul, Chicago-Kent, and John Marshall law schools in April. Butter is also a hip-hop & electronic music MC and has developed a style for public addresses combining the rigor of a guest lecture to a grad school class with the accessibility and engagement of a musical performance. Here's an example, outside the FBI on MLK Day.
