As managing Director of Skidmore Owens and Merrill Architects, Carrie Byles is focused on the design of high performance buildings and communities that advance social, economic and environmental issues. She is overseeing highly sustainable community designs for Treasure Island and Parkmerced in San Francisco and cutting edge multidisciplinary, sustainable research facilities including the new Neurosciences Building at UCSF. Carrie has more than 23 years of diverse international experience in design, technology, and management with special emphasis on projects with complex programmatic and technological requirements. She is passionate about multidisciplinary, researchbased design and the promotion of early broadbased collaboration to spawn new ideas and create a strong foundation for success. Carrie was selected as a 2009 Design Futures Council Senior Follow in recognition of her significant contributions toward the understanding of changing trends, new research, and applied knowledge leading to innovative design models that improve the built environment and the human condition. The Fellowship is granted to individuals who have provided noteworthy leadership to the advancement of design, design solutions, or the design professions.
