Michael Castleman, M.A., is a health journalist who specializes in alternative therapies, particularly herbal medicine. His book, The New Healing Herbs, recently released in an updated, expanded third edition, has sold more than 1 million copies, making it one of the bestselling herb guides of all time. The book explores the folkloric medical uses of 130 herbs, and then examines the scientific research on their effects. Guess what: In most cases, the research shows that these plants do what our ancestors thought they did, in a few cases, less, and in some cases, more. The book also emphasizes safety. Michael Castleman is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Michigan. He earned a Masters in journalism from UC Berkeley. He has been the herbal medicine columnist for Herb Quarterly magazine for 22 years. He has written about herbal medicine for many magazines and Web sites, among them: Reader's Digest, AARP magazine, Family Circle, Psychology Today, Men's Fitness, and WebMD.
