Thomas J. Murphy Ph.D.
Murphy was a chemistry professor at DePaul University where he discovered that DDT and PCBs, and many other toxins in the Great Lakes were coming primarily from the atmosphere. Murphy also founded and directed the Environmental Science Program, now housed in an LEED Gold building.
For the past two years Murphy has been a principal in the development of an environmental sustainability program for the Edgewater community on the north side of Chicago. This program has several goals: to encourage the residents to shop locally; to reduce, reuse and recycle; to increase green space in the community; to make the schools greener in their operations and curriculum; to make the neighborhood more attractive and to support the Chicago Climate Action Plan by making our buildings more energy efficient.
