John has been a pioneer in the development of solar homes, sustainable community development and self-sufficient homes worldwide for over 40 years. He has been building zero energy homes in the Washington DC region for almost 30 years. He built the first sustainable community in South Africa in 1995 which was recognized at the Kyoto Global Warming conference. He was the sustainability consultant to the Beijing Olympics and built sustainable communities and hospitals throughout China. At home John builds zero energy homes and commercial buildings. He designed and built 58 affordable townhomes in downtown Frederick Maryland that cost less to own than comparable homes in the neighborhood. John was the architect for the off grid, 100% solar/wind powered, Sustainable Energy Research Facility at Frostburg State University. John was also the founder of the Maryland Clean Energy Center which promotes economic development and job creation in the clean energy sector.
